A Spaceship Named McGuire by Randall Garrett (1927 - 1987) .

This project is complete. All audio files can be found in our catalog at http://librivox.org/a-spaceship-named-mcguire-by-randall-garrett/
Can a spaceship go crazy? Well, yes it can if it has a brain. And the new MG (magnetogravitic drive) experimental robot space ship does indeed have a 'brain'. Completely bewildered as to why the first six models of their supposedly perfect new ship model, the MG-YR, nicknamed the McGuire, have gone totally bonkers after activation and before they could ever be used, the company has called in the services of Daniel Oak. They suspect sabotage of course. Daniel Oak is the hard boiled private investigator with nerves of steel and a mind of the same substance. He is extremely expensive to hire but gets results; and he knows his way around crime, space ships and especially women. What he finds out is surprising! (Summary by Phil Chenevert)
  • Target completion date: 2013-Jan-01
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/24198
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Phil,
Whenever you're ready. SF is a pleasant break from some of the weightier tomes I listen to.

Thanks Craig. Sometimes I doubt my ability to carry off some of the dialog. Are you PLing some deep stuff now?

I have a certain fondness for ancient greek and philosophy texts. I also am inclined to dpl abandoned books books that a kind reader has adopted. SF is a welcome addition as the stories tend to be short and, for me at least, very entertaining. I'm always amazed at the number of quality sf stories written during the 40s and 50s.

Interesting Craig. I wonder if Aristotle wrote any SF? probably. Hmmmm. Of course Plato did with his 'alternate plane of existence' kind of stuff.

Anyway, I applaud your commitment to classic philosophy and DPLing abandoned projects that have been picked up. That is a great help.

And the rest of our little story is in the MW for your listening pleasure. Not as much fun as the last one but still intertaining.
