Work without Hope
by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many Librivox volunteers as possible!

This week's poem can be found at: http://www.bartleby.com/101/554.html
Thanks to 12makoto for suggesting this poem.

Begin by reading the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Work without Hope by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, read for LibriVox.org by [your name]
Adding, if you wish, date, location, or your personal url.

Then the poem:

ALL Nature seems at work. Slugs leave their lair--
The bees are stirring--birds are on the wing--
And Winter, slumbering in the open air,
Wears on his smiling face a dream of Spring!
And I, the while, the sole unbusy thing,
Nor honey make, nor pair, nor build, nor sing.
Yet well I ken the banks where amaranths blow,
Have traced the fount whence streams of nectar flow.
Bloom, O ye amaranths! bloom for whom ye may,
For me ye bloom not! Glide, rich streams, away!
With lips unbrighten'd, wreathless brow, I stroll:
And would you learn the spells that drowse my soul?
Work without Hope draws nectar in a sieve,
And Hope without an object cannot live.

At the End say:

End of poem. (Optionally add: This recording is in the public domain)

Please leave a few seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:

File name - all in lowercase: work_without_hope_coleridge_[your initials].mp3

ID-3 tags:
Title: Work without Hope - Read by [your initials]
Artist: Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Album: LibriVox Weekly Poetry
Comments: (optional) Recorded by [your name]

Please be sure that your recording software is set to the following technical specifications:
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Please check the Recording Notes thread before recording:

If this is your first recording, you'll also find this useful:

You may either post a link to your completed files here in the thread or email them to me via http://www.yousendit.com/ at this address: kristin UNDERSCORE hughes2 AT yahoo DOT com. If you use yousendit, please post the link it generates in this thread as well. (This is quite important as my email likes to pitch yousendit mail into my bulk folder.)

When you post your link, please include your name as you would like it credited on the catalogue page and any URL by which you would like it accompanied. (Note: This is necessary only if your information is not yet in the wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/ListOfReadersCatalogNames)

If you wish to contribute, please have your readings submitted by 11:59 P.M. Saturday, September 9th.

(And remember, anyone who submits a recording can choose and/or coordinate an upcoming weekly poem! If you'd like to suggest a poem or coordinate a future Weekly Poetry project, please visit this thread: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1114)

Well, there it is. My first LibriVox submission (with the hope that it is not too painful to listen to!)

I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: 'O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.' And God granted it.

William, that was anything but painful. Very nicely read. ID3 tags are perfect. Though, please be sure to check the format for the file name in future.

How would you like your name listed for the catalogue and do you have a website you would like linked to it?

Thanks. (I can stop sweating now).

Ah yes, the file name. I won't make the same mistake again.

No homepage to link to. For the catalogue, "William Graff" is fine.

Lugubres, I've got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is your file is way too soft. I looked at your waveform and it's practically non-existent. The good news is your recording sounds wonderful and I might be able to salvage it, I'll give it a try anyway. I will have to use noise reduction to be able to boost the sound high enough and it's going to sound like I used it but I'll try to keep that to a minimum.
Most important thing right now is to get your recording volume up. What are you using to record and what are your settings?

EDIT: This is about as good as I can get it. I do wish it sounded better. There was just that much noise when amplified. The other option is to re-record of course but not until we get your record volume up. Even this is a bit lower than the ideal volume.

Kristin:
I use a headset and Audacity. I don't mind rerecording it but at what volume for input & for output? In Audacity and in Volume Control or Recording Control?
