Starved Rock, A Historical Sketch by Eaton G. Osman (1853-1929) .

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/starved-rock-a-historical-sketch-by-eaton-g-osman/
This book is an early history of the Starved Rock Area in Northern Illinois. In the pre-Columbian era, the Starved Rock area was home to Native Americans, particularly the Kaskaskia who lived in the Grand Village of the Illinois across the river. Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette were the first Europeans recorded as exploring the region, and by 1683, the French had established Fort St. Louis on a large sandstone butte overlooking the river. According to a native legend, a group of Illinois Confederation (Illini) pursued by the Ottawa and Potawatomi fled to the butte in the late 18th century. The Ottawa and Potawatomi besieged the butte until all of the Illini had starved, and the butte became known as Starved Rock. The butte area was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1960. (Introduction by Wikipedia and Veronica Jenkins)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

A little local history for a summer project. Starved Rock State Park is a local attraction. Chicagoland folks like to come for the weekend (We locals wonder why, but we will take the tourist dollars).

OK, you're all set up. We will hang out in the launch pad for a bit and wait for a DPL. :)

Hey Veronica,

If you are looking for a DPL, may I volunteer? I am one of those "Chicagolanders", but I grew up in Kewanee and drove by the Utica exit today as I headed to my parents for the weekend. I've been there hiking a couple of times (while still a local) and I'd love to learn a bit more about it.

Thank you and welcome aboard MaryAnn. I have already learned something I didn't know. I learned that the author was the son of the publisher of a local paper of the time: the Ottawa Free Trader.

I hope to get the first section done soon.

Section 1 was done but there seems to be a lot of high-pitched popping sounds that I can't seem to get rid of so I may have to do it over. It is a very short section so while I will try a few quick filters, it isn't worth spending a lot of time on: faster to just re-record. Just letting you know. Sorry to be off to a slow start.

ETA: I tried a low pass filter. I guess that is what I needed. See what you think, MaryAnn.

Veronica,

Section 1 sounded just fine in my headphones. Very well read.

I assume you are checking your volume and metatags and all that before you post? Or do you want me to look at that as well as we go through?

(And remember to put the time for each section in the MW as well.)

Thank you. I do double check all the techs before I post but it wouldn't hurt for you to spot check every few files for me if you feel like it. I forgot to put the time in the MW so thanks for that. I will add that when I get to a computer: too hard from my phone. Thanks again for the listen. Now the hard sections with the French Canadian names. Please let me know if you hear a pronunciation mistake. I want to get them as accurate as my native English-only mouth can manage.

Ok, I'll check the technical stuff every now and then.

As to pronunciations, I speak absolutely no French, so it will all sound good to me! If that's important to you, I would not be offended if you want a different DPL. My little high school offered the two languages that our foreign language teacher spoke, and of those two, I picked German over French. Have often regretted that I don't have even the basics of French, but I couldn't have done both and the German has come in handy over the years.

I will accept no other DPL. :D I have been looking up the French so I am not too worried about it. My sister majored in French in college and used it exactly one time in her career to check on a fax.
:?
Thanks again,

Just letting you know that I have a touch of laryngitis this week and will be gone without a computer next week. I have a section recorded so I will try to get that edited if I can without having to re-record.
Sorry for the delay,

I am back from vacation and am, for now at least, free of laryngitis. Here is section 2.

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ek/starvedrockhistoricalsketch_02_osman.mp3

It is a short one at 10minutes, 31 seconds.

Thanks,
Veronica

I guess these are all going to be rather short which is good for me because I feel like I am making progress. :)

Anyway here is section 3:

The length is 10:47

thanks.
