"You Bid Me Try"
by Austin Dobson (1840 - 1921)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/you-bid-me-try-by-austin-dobson/
Henry Austin Dobson (January 18, 1840 – September 2, 1921), commonly Austin Dobson, was an English poet and essayist. His official career was uneventful, but as a poet and biographer he was distinguished. Those who study his work are struck by its maturity. It was about 1864 that he turned his attention to writing original prose and verse, and some of his earliest work was his best. It was not until 1868 that the appearance of St Paul's, a magazine edited by Anthony Trollope, gave Harry Dobson an opportunity and an audience; and during the next six years he contributed some of his favourite poems, including "Tu Quoque," "A Gentleman of the Old School," "A Dialogue from Plato," and "Une Marquise." Many of his poems in their original form were illustrated—some, indeed, were written to support illustrations. (summary from Wikipedia)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
(Please leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!)
"You Bid Me Try" by Austin Dobson[ read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
YOU bid me try, blue-eyes, to write
A Rondeau. What! -- forthwith? -- tonight?
Reflect. Some skill I have, 'tis true;
But thirteen lines! -- and rimed on two!
"Refrain" as well. Ah, Hapless plight!

Still, there are five lines -- ranged aright.
These Gallic bonds, I feared, would fright
My easy Muse. They did, till you --
You bid me try!

That makes them eight. The port's in sight --
'Tis all because your eyes are bright!
Now just a pair to end in "oo" --
When maids command, what can't we do?
Behold! -- the rondeau, tasteful, light,
You bid me try!
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Here is my interpretation of this clever poem. Although I have taught a lot of poetry, I really didn't know that the rondeau has so complex a form. I'll have to try to write one. :)

Here's my rendition:

As Len has said, a very clever piece of verse. It would take a much better reader than I to do justice to it.

Cheers

Here's my effort for you! 1:16 length. Question - first time I've had to put quotation marks by the title - is this new, or do we not need them? I also did the MP3 gain on this to 89% so hope it's the right volume for you. Thanks!

I did not listen to the others until I did mine! Now I wonder: maybe I shouldn't have! Oh, well. Here it is anyway.

echobase77 - thank you, good reading. There is a constant background buzz/hum that would clear up nicely with Noise Removal. Hint - for consistency in your recording, try recording background noise for the ending silence rather than have the background cut off to generated (dead) silence

Jannie - thanks, great reading; the quotation marks are in the poem title, who are we to argue :) (Please include the duration 1:16 for yours)

Maria, I'm afraid you've done a lovely job, thank you. :D

Barbydoll1206, thank you, great first reading. You may want to reduce your volume slightly on future recordings or back off from the mic a bit.
Please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the LV catalog and we can put your personal URL on your catalog page too.
You can view your brand new LV Catalog page by clicking your forum name in the Magic Window. :)

Ren33, welcome to LibriVox, good first reading, but the volume is rather low. The waveforms should be into the .5 range. You can either adjust the volume control of your recording software or increase your computer's system volume - Control Panel / Sound / Recording / select your mic / Properties / Levels (adjust if necessary) . I've amplified your recording and added a few seconds of ending silence to bring it up to the required 5 seconds.
Please take a listen and tell me what you think..

I have read these instructions. I actually think I know just what you mean, but I just had not put that volume up, as I thought I might overdo it. I have adjusted the Audacity setting for input. I may have to get a different microphone if this new adjustment does not fix it.

I've amplified your recording and added a few seconds off ending silence to bring it up to the required 5 seconds.
I am sorry! I thought I had done that

Also, please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the LV catalog
For now can we put Barbara E. McCarthy?
Thank you for all the help.

I did listen. I hear the difference. Hoping practice improves. Thank you.
