The Bostonians (Vol. 1 & 2) by Henry James (1843 - 1916).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-bostonians-vol-1-2-by-henry-james/

thistlechick (Betsie) has taken over as BC. If you have any questions, please post below or PM thistlechick (Betsie).
This bittersweet tragicomedy centers on an odd triangle of characters: Basil Ransom, a political conservative from Mississippi; Olive Chancellor, Ransom's cousin and a Boston feminist; and Verena Tarrant, a pretty, young protégée of Olive's in the feminist movement. The storyline concerns the struggle between Ransom and Olive for Verena's allegiance and affection, though the novel also includes a wide panorama of political activists, newspaper people, and quirky eccentrics.(Summary by Wikipedia)
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let us know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is August 31, 2011 (updated on Aug. 15, 2011).
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!):
    Vol. 1, Chapters 1-23: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/19717
    Vol. 2, Chapters 24-42: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/19718
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let us know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalog.

We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: Standard

I'd like to sign up for chapters right away!

I'd like a chapter right now! I'll ask for more as I reassess my schedule in light of previous reading commitments :) (Just want those signed/sealed/delivered and I will definately sign up for more).

SO very glad that this project is underway. This is a BIG project with a real sweeping scope. So proud of you guys! :) :) I really wanted Librivox to do "The Bostonians" so thank you so much both BC and MC (and DPL when they arrive) for this wonderful project!

Welcome Elaine (and Sparky)! I have put you on the MW for Chapter 4, which begins:
She had told him before they started that they should be early; she wished to see Miss Birdseye alone, before the arrival of any one else. This was just for the pleasure of seeing her—it was an opportunity; she was always so taken up with others.

Oooh, The Bostonians! I would love to join in :) I would be happy to do sections 2 and 3, (am guessing, chapters 2 and 3?); unless Liz, you would rather do them to keep a continuity going between the first 3 chapters? In which case I can do chapters 5 and 6 to start with; I don't mind either way.

I also hope to take up more later, depending on my schedule :)

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ni/the bostonians chapter 4.mp3

i hope its ok, i'm worried im not that clear  so let me know if anything needs to be done about that.

story of my first recording.......
i read through the chapter aloud first to get a feel for the text then last night braved the mic and did my first recording
i made a lot of mistakes :hmm:

i saved it then started to listen over it but.......... it was gone!!!!!!! even the programme refused to work. imaging my frustration, i gave up and went to bed.

so tonight i tried again, with success, but thankgoodness for editing as i sniffed, accidently burped and told the cat off
but i learned alot from the first recording and hopefully this recording is the better for it.

oh and can you list me by my real name as Elaine Webb

thanks
