Linda,

I think your recording would benefit from some noise-removal, particularly because your voice is quite soft. This is beyond my capability, though - at least, to do it without ruining the sound of your voice! If you'd be happy for us to give it a try, I'll ask for help from one of our resident experts.

What do you think? Good idea?

I went ahead and did a quick noise removal on her recording - hope I wasn't being too forward:

Her yousendit link only had the sixth stanza. Is there a longer recording or did she record that stanza only?

John,

You're a hero!

There are actually two files, as I need to patch them together. If I quickly do that, and upload it to a server, could you work your magic on the complete file?

Bear with me a few minutes...

John,

The complete file is here:-

Your noise reduction in the short file is great!

Thanks again,

Okay -

I cleaned it up... it actually was fairly easy because the noise level was consistent throughout.

Uploading now - give it about 30 minutes.

John,

You're up first. Here's the archive page - LV catalogue page following shortly:-

http://www.archive.org/details/ballad_of_reading_gaol_jg_librivox

Let me know if you spot any funnies.

Here's the LV catalogue page:-

Once Linda's is catalogued, I'll need to differentiate between the two in the listings, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Hihi (just got some much needed sleep)... thank you, btw, for getting rid of the background noise... i see what you mean... the air itself seems to compete with my voice... (just listened to it in its entirety and sounds good to me!)

thx again =)

Linda,

Here's your Archive page:-

The other file formats haven't been created yet, but the rest should be OK. Let me know if you spot any funnies.

And the LV catalogue page, with a few details to complete once the Archive files are ready:-

Hi Linda,

That's because those files haven't been created yet. They should be there after another 24 hours or so.

Hey, isn't there a recording of this work floating around that was purportedly read by Wilde himself? Anyone else heard about this? I had the file on my old computer before my hard drive was lost ...

Ah, not actually by him, looks like, but here's an article on it if anybody's interested :) : http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/humnet/clarklib/wildvoic.htm

Haven't listened to this yet, put plan on it shortly :)!

I just did some quick googling and it looks like the recording was discredited. After some searching tho, I came across a Real Player version of it...

VI

In Reading gaol by Reading town
There is a pit of shame,
And in it lies a wretched man
Eaten by teeth of flame,
In a burning winding-sheet he lies,
And his grave has got no name.

And there, till Christ call forth the dead,
In silence let him lie:
No need to waste the foolish tear,
Or heave the windy sigh:
The man had killed the thing he loved,
And so he had to die.

And all men kill the thing they love,
By all let this be heard...

The recording stops there - even though the original posting mentioned that it goes through the end and has Wilde introducing himself.

Ah well...

Thats neat. When I was researching for the book I am coordinating, I came across an audio file of Stephen Leacock. It sounded so old and scratchy, I wished I could use a snippit in my recording. I wonder what the legality of that would be? :)

Thanks for the link, John :D -- Yeah, it seems probably to be false, but all the same Vyvyan Holland (Wilde's son) found the recording convincing enough to believe it was him. So I hope it provides a glimpse of what he might have actually sounded like :D (such a funny voice XD).

Cataloguing for both versions is complete - see links in the top post - so I am moving this thread to 'Completed Projects'.

Many thanks to both Linda and John!
