Why not mossy on here and record a chapter for me?

Oh, dear. This could be addictive, it's so EASY. I'm not much of a poetry person, though, so that will save you all from being swamped by my mediocre recordings, but I have always loved this one of Edna St. Vincent Millay's:

http://www.newness-of-life.com/librivox/poems/sonnet_2_millay_reg.mp3

It's called Sonnet II, and if you go by the first-line-style title it's "Time does not bring relief; you all have lied".

It's 55 seconds long, and you can put me in the catalog as rachelellen even though I use my real name in the recording. Google won't archive that. :)

OK, here is the first recording for Librivox by my daughter Claire, age 6-almost-7. It's "Windy Nights" by Robert Louis Stevenson, and it's 40 seconds long.

She would like to go by "Claire Cornelia" in the catalog, please. :)

Maria, I got Tarantella and In August and then yousendit froze up on me so I haven't gotten Decimal Point yet but I will keep trying. With the first two, your volume was extremely quiet, completely inaudible on my computer until I boosted it up considerably. Next time check your volume settings before you record. :)

Rachel and Claire - wonderful jobs both of you!! It's great to get another young voice in the group! In the future, if you could post the sources for your poems, that would be helpful. Don't worry about these ones, I tracked them down, but just try to remember next time. :)

My first recording! I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, and to be honest I mainly just wanted to make sure I was using Audacity correctly. So tell me if it didn't come through or if it's just noise.

It's the Yarn of the Nancy Bell, by W. S. Gilbert.

I didn't see that anybody had recorded it on here before, but I'm sure I missed it because it's probably the most famous poem about cannibalism written by a 19th century operetta lyracist.

And here's me, attempting to read coherently.

I'm still learning about all this, so tell me if I did something wrong.

John_AB, it comes through true and fine, it does! Well done, matie.
Clear recording, great input volume I'd say, excellent reading.

I would give a pinch of advice since you ask. The range in louds and softs sometimes needs a little extra scrutiny in the edit, with the softest bits boosted a little and the loudest bits softened a tad. When the cook goes in, I'd pull that audio down a notch -- I was reaching quickly for my speaker volume. (Didn't notice any cup-your-ear hard-to-hear spots.) In Audacity, to make those spot adjustments, highlight the section (zoom in as needed using the mag glass first), Effects > Amplify > slide up or down about _/- 3 or 6. Another thing that often works nicely on spots is Effects > Normalize (but sometimes its change is more than you intend).

Since you're just learning your way around Audacity, I'd say it's a great thing you've got good clean audio. Don't ever use Audacity's Effects/Noise Reduction, never. It always sounds inferior to any noise it may remove. In general the filters in Audacity are pretty ... artificial sounding. Useful ones are amplify up or down, normalize . . . tempo is ok too actually used sparingly ... otherwise Audacity's filters are too heavy-handed or something.

Anyway. :D
Outstanding first recording!!!!
What sort of thing do you love to read? Got plans already? There's lots afoot, and you sound (to me) ready for any of it, all of it!

Thanks, I'm glad it came through. I'll keep the volume piece in mind. I was actually going to try and fool around with the noise reduction thing just to see how it worked, but I coudn't find it. Since you say it doesn't work so well, though, I guess maybe I won't bother.

Not sure what I'll record next but I'll see.

FYI Maria, finally got Decimal Point to download. It was quiet also but once I boosted the volume it sounds great!

There was... something not quite right with my computer. (It was quiet on pretty much everything I did)... I think it's fixed now, though.

Here's a meager gravelly one for Collection 12:

Sound File

PD source: The source on the other hand is a little different. It doesn't appear anywhere "officially" ?that I can find. Poets' Corner doesn't list it, but if you notice in their Williams Lisiting, they've included but a few of the 52 poems that are in his book Al Que Quiere! A Book of Poems [1917] (one of these I previously read for SPC 11.) I own a copy of AQQ. I've submitted a carefully proofed copy of today's submission ("Tract") to Poet's Corner. In the meanwhile, for the rest of the Net, I've posted the text, along with a copy of the title page from the original book, here: William Carlos Williams ? Tract.

Hopefully this is okay. How is this usually handled? I should have asked before I posted. Thanks.

Thanks for the info John. Also I just noticed that your file was missing all of its ID3 tags so you'll want to double check that next time.
