Short Science Fiction Collection 044

This project is complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page:
http://librivox.org/short-science-fiction-collection-044-by-various/

This collection is for science fiction recordings of less than 70 minutes in duration

Collection Requirements:
  • Text must be in the Public Domain (with expired copyright, or published before 1923)
  • Each recording must contain a complete story
  • Claiming stories is unnecessary (duplicates are held for future collections)
  • There is no deadline (when finished, post to the currently open collection)
  • For help with LibriVox requirements and policies see the Recording Notes topic
Finding Texts:
  • Stories found on the Project Gutenberg US site are cleared for recording
  • Gutenberg’s Science Fiction Bookshelf is a good starting point
  • Gutenberg’s science fiction content is not always cataloged as such (search by other criteria)
  • Gutenberg plain text, us-ascii, uncompressed files of less than 78 KB or 10,000 story words can generally be read in less than 70 minutes
  • The LibriVox wiki also contains pages listing Gutenberg stories appropriate to this collection:
  • The Science Fiction Short Stories page shows stories that can be read in less than 60 minutes
  • The Science Fiction Shortish Stories page shows longer stories that may be read in less than 60 minutes depending on your reading speed
  • The LibriVox Short Science Fiction Index displays stories already in the LibriVox catalog (Note: duplicates welcome)
  • Stories from sources other than Gutenberg require evidence of public domain status. For more information see the Copyright and Public Domain page of the LibriVox wiki

File Requirements:
  • Recording must be a monaural MP3 file with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and a bit rate of 128 Kbps.
  • File name must be formatted entirely in lower case letters and use under-bars to separate values as in: ssf044_titleinoneword_authorlastname_readersinitials.mp3 (e.g. ssf044_nightfall_asimov_abc.mp3) – Exclude definite articles like “The” from the file name (e.g. grapesofwrath_steinbeck_abc.mp3)
  • Recording must contain LibriVox announcements at beginning and end:

    Beginning Announcement:
“[story title] by [author]. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name]".
Then repeat: "[Title], by [author]. Translated by [translator]."

    Ending Announcement:
"End of [title], by [author] Translated by [translator]."
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
  • Recordings of less than 30 minutes require 5 seconds of silence at the end of the file
  • Recordings of more than 30 minutes require 10 seconds of silence at the end of the file
  • All files must have ID3 V2 tags that populate the following 3 fields:

    Title: [story title]
Artist: [author name] (trans. by [translator name])
Album: Librivox Short Sci-fi Story Collection, vol. 044

Posting completed recordings:
  • Send your completed recording to us by using the LibriVox Uploader
    Image
    folder: gam – GreggMargarite
  • Always post a message to this forum thread after a successful upload. The message must contain:
    • The story title
    • The author’s name
    • The URL displayed by the LibriVox Uploader after the file has successfully uploaded
    • The URL for the online version of the text
    • The duration of the recording
  • If this is your first submission to the Short Science Fiction Collections please provide:
    • Your name/pseudonym as you wish it to appear in the LibriVox catalog
    • Your personal website URL (optional)
  • Check this forum thread frequently for messages pertaining to your story!

I can confirm that new SF has slowed to a trickle over at GP. I’m not sure what’s going on…

ps: I notice that you wrote ssf043 instead of ssf044 in the file requirements... A minor thing, but thought I'd mention! :o)

A similar but much more positive story about first contact with Mars than Earthmen Bearing Gifts!

Just happened to see this by accident.
PG isn't clearing any Rule 6 books, stories, etc., at the present time because of a problem they ran into with a SciFi story. At this link go down to "Sample Responses" - it's the first thing under that. http://cand.pglaf.org/
You can google rule 6 project gutenberg or PG copyright or similar to find more.

I know they haven't cleared any rule 6 stuff since the end of September - because I have a bunch of Rule 6 books (Not SciFi magazine articles :-)) I'm waiting for them to clear (so I can read them for Librivox!)
I'm hoping they will start doing rule 6 clearances again soon, but I don't know when that will be. And even if they have started again there is probably a pretty good backlog.
I know there shouldn't be any problems with my stuff at least. :-)

By the way, the filename-requirement statement in the first post is incorrect - it says "ssf043".

Ho hum... I could understand if they pulled stories by the bigger name authors, but where are you gonna find most of those old sci-fi stories outside of the original publications? So many gems!

Oh well. I'll resist recording more, though I'll continue reading and discovering more of them while they're still available. The most recent story I read and thoroughly enjoyed - http://www.gutenberg.org/files/29471/29471-h/29471-h.htm "The Velvet Glove" by Harry Harrison. I'll have to find more HH soon.

A rather interesting story combining virtual reality and utopia (along with the standard obsessed scientist and lost love). Amusing how the character longs for a perfect form of moving pictures that can accurately reproduce sound and make you feel part of the story. I wonder what he would think of 3D movies, and high-def?

mrpatch – Thanks for the Brown, Howard, and thanks for that 43 to 44 catch!

Maria – Thanks for the background. As usual, the future is unclear.

corinna – Thanks for the Anderson and Wertenbaker!

This is my first recording for Librivox, for ANY collection, so I hope I did everything right. I have to admit I really liked the story I read; will have to check out more of the author's writing. Here's the info:

STORY TITLE: No Pets Allowed
AUTHOR: M.A. Cummings
URL UPDLOAD: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/gam/ssf044_nopetsallowed_cummings_kcc.mp3
URL ON-LINE TEXT: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/29139
RUN TIME: 6:24

My name can appear in the Librivox catalog as Kelly Thompson.

If there's something I've forgotten to do somewhere in this process, please give me a shout. Thanks. kt

The Altar at Midnight
by C.M. Kornbluth
Duration: 15:52

The poignant story of a Spacer (Astronaut) on leave, told by a man who met him at a Bar. That's all I can say about it, with out giving away the plot.

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/gam/ssf044_thealtaratmidnight_kornbluth_mdk.mp3

This is my first attempt to do '1st person narration' in character with voices and accents. After listening to it, I know I've got a loooong way to go :) but it would be cool, if anyone would like to give me some feedback. Thank you!

Cheers,
Marc

Hi. Newby trying to find his way around. I'm looking to do some reading nd wondering how to make this happen. Can I help with this project? Any tips from you advanced members would be apreciated. I have read most of the FAQ's and I believe I'm ready to try it.
TIA
