Public Domain Hymns. [Translated by Translator] (Birth and Death Dates of Translator).
"Originally modeled on the Psalms and other poetic passages (commonly referred to as "canticles") in the Scriptures, Christian hymns are generally directed as praise and worship to the monotheistic God. Many refer to Jesus Christ either directly or indirectly. Since the earliest times, Christians have sung "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs", both in private devotions and in corporate worship (Matthew 26:30; 1 Cor 14:26; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16; James 5:13; cf. Revelation 5:8-10; Revelation 14:1-5). One definition of a hymn is "...a lyric poem, reverently and devotionally conceived, which is designed to be sung and which expresses the worshipper's attitude toward God or God's purposes in human life. It should be simple and metrical in form, genuinely emotional, poetic and literary in style, spiritual in quality, and in its ideas so direct and so immediately apparent as to unify a congregation while singing it"." 1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is March 15, 2011.
  4. Where do I find the text?

I Love to Tell the Story
I Must Tell Jesus
I Need Thee Every Hour
I Need Thee Precious Jesus
I Remember When My Burdens Rolled Away

63

I Saw One Hanging on a Tree
I Say to All Men Far and Near
I Sing the Mighty Power of God
I Sought the Lord
I Stand Amazed in the Presence
I Surrender All (1)
I Think When I Read That Sweet Story
I Vow to Thee My Country
I Waited for the Lord Most High
I Walk the King's Highway
I Wandered in the Shades of Night
I Want a Principle Within

64

I Was a Wandering Sheep
I Was Made a Christian
I Will Ever Sing Thy Praises
I Will Make the Darkness Light
I Will Not Be Afraid
I Will Praise Him
I Will Sing the Wondrous Story
I Would Be Like Jesus
I Would Be True
I'm But a Stranger Here
I've a Message from the Lord
I've Anchored in Jesus

65

I've Believed the True Report
I've Found a Friend
I've Got Peace Like a River
If Christ Is Mine
If Jesus Goes with Me
If on a Quiet Sea
If Tonight Should End the World
If You Will Only Let God Guide You
I'll Be a Sunbeam
I'll Bear It Lord for Thee
I'll Go Where You Want Me to Go
I'll Live for Him

In the Secret of His Presence
In the Service of the King
In the Sweet By and By
In Thee Is Gladness
In Time of Tribulation
Infant Holy Infant Lowly
Infinite God to Thee We Raise
Into the Woods
Into Thy Gracious Hands I Fall
Is It for Me

69

Is It the Crowning Day
Is It There
Is My Name Written There
Is There a Heart Bent O'er with Sorrow
Is Thy Heart Right with God
Is Your All on the Altar

It Is Finished
It Is Glory Just to Walk with Him

Holy cow!

So we claim a (sub)section, then read the hymns, or must they be sung?

I'm afraid archive freaks out when we have sections over 155 I think. Not sure how you plan on doing this? Will you publish it as a collection when you get a number of files in, say 20?

Perhaps this could be done the same way we do the weekly poetry (i.e. a certain number of pieces cataloged per week), except that it could remain in this order in the MWs for the individual weeks' project. Just an idea.

The cutoff is 255 - 2 to the 8th power, minus 1. :)

I was wondering what you would suggest. There are 173 divisions, but I've fit them into about 17 "sections" with about 10 sub-sections each. Would that make this easier for the archive to digest?

Thanks,

Sam

It looks to me like you want people to sign up for the 173 "subsections" of about 12 hymns each, right? So these would be your sections in the MW. (Signing up people for 17 sections of about 120 hymns each would be a little crazy.)

I would suggest making each of your 17 "sections" a separate volume of the project. This could be Volume 1 with your section 1 (10 "sub"sections, 120 hymns).

In my opinion, anyway. :)

May I be the the DPL for this? As a church musician, it's kind of up my alley. I can check the wording and music.

Also, I'll try to get my hubby of the golden voice to participate by recording!

Also--
how did you get this list? We're not claiming that this is the complete list of PD hymns, right?

That is correct. :)

This list comes from the website listed which tags them each as public domain.

I like the idea of setting up the MW with the sections mentioned, each as a "volume."

Have you considered creating smaller audio hymn-books alphabetically? For instance, Hymnal A-Ah ranging from A Beautiful Life to Ah Holy Jesus at approximately 36 songs.
They call me Threadkiller.

Just my 2 cents:

I think it would be easier and be completed better if people choose what they want to record and make it a collection. When you have 20 or so completed, they get cataloged. There may be songs that get passed over for more well known songs. When you get near the end, post a collection of 'non-popular' hymns. lol

As hymns get cataloged, they are removed from the list of choices so there is no overlap in the collections.

Just a thought, it's your project Sam, do what you like best.

Esther (who has thought of doing a PD hymn collection in the past) :D

That's a good idea to, though some would have to be merged with other letters (Z, for instance).

Technically "A Beautiful Life" would be with the B's anyway... not to mention all those "The"'s grouped together. The list on the website was clearly compiled by a computer. [grin]
