NB - This was started as a solo project, but is now thrown open to 'the group'. Please post a reply if you would like to record any of the unclaimed chapters. Thanks!

earthcalling (David) will 'BC' this, at least long enough to see if it has legs.

Thank you :D

No acting required... no need to get 'emotionally prepared' for inspirational writing... and then, of course, it's Emerson... it's easy to imagine how his essays should be read... and it's nice to be reading them when it's so easy to be cynical these days...

Hi Linda,

I'll be your MC for this project. You'll see I've added the category code NF (non-fiction) and my MC initials to the thread title. I've added the project to the appropriate cataloge page ( http://librivox.org/to-come-solo-projects/ ), linking to this thread.

As this is your first solo project (it is, right? :D), can you start by reading through How to record a whole book on your own. You?ll find everything you need to know there and in the pages linked to from the article.

If you have any questions, just ask!

Hi David! Thank you very much :D ... yes, indeed, this is my first solo project (is it that obvious)?

I'll be sure to give the how-to page a very careful look-see... Glad to have your support!

Wow... this was much more challenging than I thought it would be... not that I'm giving up -- though I think I undershot the pace... just a tad. Instead of every 3-4 days per article, I think I might want to shoot for 3 pages per day (total of ~45 days), minus the 15 pages ('5 days') for 'History,' which would make my target date to be... what is today's date? ... July 19 + 40 days... which is Aug. 29... give or take... ?? (instincts should tell you, though, not to trust me...)

Also, my voice is a bit raspy the first ten minutes or so, cuz I'd caught a cold the other day, but kept recording anyway, so that by the middle, I sounded like I was dying... (I took a day off and then rerecorded the last 3/4 of it, and I think the first 1/4 is okay, but if not, I can rerecord that part too)...

Here's a link to the recording (at yousendit... I just sent it to myself)

Please note, the file is a whopping 49993 KB (53 min, 19 sec)... which is just a tad over your '40 min' guideline... I'm hoping I won't have to split it up, cuz if I do... I mine as well do the first part over... sigh! (i'm such a snot)

And you can find the text at PG: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/2944

Also, I named the file "essays_first_series_history_emerson" (as opposed to referring to the essay by number, although I included the number in the ID3 tags... just cuz the title of the essay I think would be more helpful to most people.

ID3 tags:

Title: Essays, First Series -- [Essay Title (#)]
Artist: Ralph Waldo Emerson
Album: Essays, First Series
Genre: Speech

File name: "essay_first_series_[essay title]_emerson.mp3"

And that should be it, for now...

Hi Linda,

Sorry for the slow reply. Took my eye off the ball for a second there.

I'm uploading 'History' to a folder on Gesine's server, and will put a link in your first post.

Can I suggest for the track titles: "Essay 01 - History" etc.? That way, they'll come up in the right order if sorted by track. I can change this once the files are uploaded to the validator.

Also, we don't need the title ('History' etc) in the file name. The catalogue page picks up the track title, rather than the file name. So in this case, if you follow my suggestion on track titles, the first file will show in the catalogue as 'Essay 01 - History'.

I've amended the first file name to: essays_first_series_01_emerson.mp3

OK, I think that's it for now. Happy recording!

Hi David, that's okay (I can see membership is in the thousands... and wow, that's a lot to moderate...)

The new file name makes sense... duly noted... And I should've created a list of the essays in my first post already; I'll go do that now.

Ah... much to do, much to do!

all the best,

Linda

Here's Self-Reliance =D (Sorry... I got a little distracted... with all the pretty html color codes and learning nifty css stuff... not that that's relevant here...)

Eh, I've decided to split the reading in two, and I'll prolly split History up too...

so that with two parts, I added "a" or "b" to the file name, so Self-Reliance is "essays_first_series_self_reliance_a_emerson_ll" (or "b")

And the ID3 tags have a slightly different title:

"Essays, First Series -- Self-Reliance (2A)" (The "2" refers to where the essay is in the book.)

---- EDIT ----

(Just remembered that I need to put the essay number in the file name... so I renamed them and uploaded them again at yousendit)

file name: "essays_first_series_self_reliance_(#a)_emerson" (or "#b")

(01a) History, Part A:

(01b) History, Part B:

(02a) Self-Reliance, Part A:

(02b) Self-Reliance, Part B:

----

sigh! and now, back to work!

Hi David, just saw this... I haven't been getting emails notifying me of when there're new posts for maybe a month now... so I guess I've been letting this one kinda slip... To be honest, I think I'm gonna try to finish another project, the Hopkins poems first, and go all out on Emerson Winter break... don't mean to hold everything up :(
