Hi Bart,

This is my first attempt at a LibriVox recording. I've amplified the file because I was told that my test was a little soft but I've kept the original in case you want me to make it a little softer.

The story is drawn from a science fiction journal but to my mind has much more in common with the horror genre (it falls into the 'stay in a haunted house' model).

If the recording is accepted, I'd like to be listed in the catalog as Aidan Brack.

Hi Aiden,

Do you have the original file before the noise cleaning too?

Indeed, the recording is a bit loud, but that's not a problem. I can always deamplify it a little.

What I don't like is the noise cleaning, which is audible.
It's a misunderstanding that all background noise should be filtered out. The noise also contains accoustical information. Without it a voice sounds a bit metallic.

If you do have the original file before the noise cleaning, please experiment with it, and don't worry about the noise, as long as your voice is clear. You can also send the file to me and I will try to find the right balance.

If you don't have the original file before the noise cleaning I will accept this file.

Bart,

Thanks for the quick response and for the useful feedback you've given to me. Unfortunately I applied the noise cleaning effect before saving my 'raw' file. I had picked up on the metallic sound to my voice but it never occurred to me that the noise cleaning would have been responsible - I had assumed that was a result of the amplification process. Obviously this is still all very new to me. :)

Now I know how to avoid that metallic sound I think I'd like to take the time to re-record to get it right. I'll try to get a new recording done over the next day or two and submit it again, if that would be okay. If so, I'll post a new link to this thread with a link to the corrected file in it.

Many thanks,
Aidan

Just take your time and repost when you're ready.
I like the story: SciFi & Horror. That's really my thing.

I've PL'ed the latest stories and

Section 9 Buried Alive is PL OK! Nice reading.

Section 10 The Horned Women has a minor glitch in the intro. Taryn begins with the Librivox disclaimer. The title and author of the story should be stated first, and then the disclaimer and the reader's name etc,

Also I rechecked section 7 The Murder Hole and that intro also has the same glitch. I'm sorry I overlooked that before, But these are minor edits

Again the readings are wonderfully expressive.

Best regards,
Betty

I've re-recorded so hopefully it'll be a little better this time. I've kept the original files this time so if there are any problems I'm happy to send them to you.

The URL is the same as before: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ba/ghohor011_corpseonthegrating_cave_ab.mp3

Sorry Aidan,
I haven't got time now to listen to your new file.
It will take at least another 4 or 5 hours before I'm home.
I'll listen to the file as soon as I can.

@Aiden: The recording is fine now.
I think it's loud enough and I don't hear the metallic sound anymore.
For the future: It's not neccesary to filter out all the background noise. That gives you some freedom in how you do the noise cleaning.
For your next recordings play around with some different settings. It took me at least 6 months before I was really satisfied with mine. In fact it's a bit of fun experimenting with your settings!

Thanks for your recording. I hope you'll record more for LibriVox.

Thanks Bart for the feedback and for including my recording in the collection. I'm definitely planning to record some more and do some experimentation with Audacity's settings in the future.

All the best,
Aidan
