Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education by John Dewey (October 20, 1859 – June 1, 1952) .

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/democracy-and-education-by-john-dewey/
An important, controversial, and often cited work on public education. Dewey discusses the role of public education in a democracy and the different methods for achieving quality in education. After its initial publication, this book began a revolution in educational thinking; one that emphasized growth, experience, and activity as key elements in promoting democratic qualities in students and educators alike. (Temporary introduction by timferreira)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): I will provide a link for each section to the text at Google Docs. The entire work is at: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/852
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

Please leave no more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!

Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • Chapter [number] of Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"

Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

I'd be really happy to MC this. Hold tight and I will set things up...

Awesome. I was surprised this book hadn't been done already. But maybe I overestimate the importance of it since I'm surrounded by graduate students and professors of education. :)

Really? You'd better come out with your hands up.

...and I won't tell you anything about me or you'll get paranoid.

Probably more "in my element" than "paranoid"...

Thanks again for MCing. I'll start recording when I finish some of the sections of projects I'm currently responsible for.

Let me know when you've finished setting it up. I'd like to look for a DPL also, but that can wait until I've got a few sections recorded and posted. Unless someone is interested and wants to volunteer ahead of time! :)

I'll also be happy to DPL, Tim.

...on the assumption that this is going to go at a reasonably leisurely pace (which I'm guessing from the target date).

Also, I've changed the source text to Gutenberg, because I noticed that the Google books version was not available in Europe. I'm assuming that the text will be identical, though.

Cheers,
Carl.

Perfect. Thanks. Yes, as a graduate student, leisurely is the way I like to get things done. Unless I have papers due, in which case LibriVox is going to be the perfect thing for me to do to procrastinate, so the files will come in more quickly then. :)

Hi. I was just checking out the Gutenberg version and it seems to be the same text as the one I had linked to on Google Books, with the exception that the Gutenberg version does not have the preface that the Google Books version had. Which is fine with me.... What would you suggest?

Should I go ahead and record the preface as section 00 even though it doesn't appear on the Gutenberg link? Or should we just delete section 00, skip the preface, and start with Chapter 1 and section 01?

I'll leave it up to you. Thanks again for all of your help.

You could use the following source:
http://www.archive.org/details/democracyandedu00dewegoog

It has the preface and more importantly it can be viewed by everyone which is not the case with google books.

Great. That's what I'll use. Thanks.

Also, do I need to request a the URL and login info for the BC admin system in order to access the Magic Window? I'd like to put in some information about word count so that I'll know (and you'll know) what I'm getting myself into before recording each section.

I'm also a DPL on another project and need to access the Magic Window to put in notes, etc. Anyway, I'm not sure who I'm supposed to request that from.

Thanks for all of your help. The rate of my question-asking will slow down after this one.

I've just pm'd you details for the Magic Window login.

There's a link at the bottom left of the MW, which is where you go to access the edit screen.

I'm uploading the Preface now and putting it in the MW.

It is a whopping 01:52, half of which is the introductory LibriVox stuff.

First section is great, Tim. Can't wait to hear something more substantial.

There are some non-particularly-noticable over-plosive Ps on the recording. Not a problem at all for me, but just thought I would report it.

Cheers,
Carl.
