The Wife of the Secretary of State by Ella Middleton Tybout (1871 - 1952).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-wife-of-the-secretary-of-state-by-ella-middleton-tybout/
In this political thriller set at the turn of the 20th century, several lives, both of Washington insiders and those on the periphery, intersect over the issue of some stolen diplomatic papers. And what hidden secrets bind Mrs. Redmond, the wife of the Secretary of State, to the unscrupulous Count Valdmir, the Russian ambassador? Politics, power, and intrigue combine in this novel, first published in 1905. (Summary by Nullifidian)
WARNING: Because Ella Middleton Tybout died in 1952, her works are only public domain for U.S. residents, residents of Life + 50 countries, and residents of Life + 70 countries that recognize the rule of the shorter term.
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is January 15, 2011.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.archive.org/details/wifeofsecretaryo00tyboiala
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: Standard.

I'll MC this. Be back with the MW.

(You might get more volunteer readers if you came up with even a temporary summary for the first post. Just a thought.)

Edit: OK, you're all set. I'll move this to Readers Wanted in a day or two.

Thanks, Tricia! :)

I added a brief summary—more of a teaser, really, since this seems to be a political thriller.

My 1-minute test was approved, and I'm ready to volunteer!

I'll take section 2 if that's alright...

I didn't follow the "intro" wording exactly because of the dedication and introduction. Let me know if you want me to change it.

Section 1
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/tg/wifesecretarytate_01_tybout.mp3
duration 21:19

I will also take section 2.

Rebecca - could you say "Introduction and Chapter 1 of The Wife of the Sec of St" at the beginning, instead of just the title?

The reason we have the chapter number at the very beginning is so that the blind and those otherwise flipping through the sections audibly can hear right away which chapter/section it is. So I think doing it this way would be better than leaving the chapter indicator off entirely.

(It looks like Robin claimed chapter 2 in the post right above yours.)

Rebecca,

I'm still waiting for admin approval to reply to PM's.

Feel free to take Section 2. I'll take Section 3.

Many thanks to TriciaG for juggling things while I was away.

I was helping my father get his car back from the dealership in Los Angeles, where it was being repaired after breaking down on Sunday. On the way, I got food poisoning, so it really has been an eventful day.

Now, RobinC
Anyway, normally, the practice is to assign the chapters to the person who requests it first, but if you're fine with taking chapter 3 instead, then I will happily assign it to you.

Accordingly, I'm assigning the 2nd section to Rebecca and the 3rd to you.

Since you're new here, please let me know if you have a preference for a particular catalogue name (usually one's real name, in full or in part) and if you have a personal URL, like a website or blog, that you'd like to be linked from your catalogue page.

Thank you for your interest in this project, and welcome to LibriVox! :D

DrBeccaAnne:
Thanks for your prompt submission. You've made me feel guilty about neglecting my claimed chapters in the other group project I'm BCing.
