Soaked In Seaweed and 7 other Nonsense Novels by STEPHEN LEACOCK (1869 - 1944) .

This wonderful book is complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/soaked-in-seaweed-and-7-other-nonsense-novels-by-stephen-leacock/

Volunteers outside the USA: STEPHEN LEACOCK died in 1944. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, and Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955).
8 great spoofs of 'types' of fiction by the premier Canadian humorist Leacock, taken from his book Nonsense Novels. The title of each parody gives away it's 'genre'
1. Soaked in Seaweed or, Upset in the Ocean; 2. Maddened by Mystery: or, The Defective Detective; 3. "Q." A Psychic Pstory of the Psupernatural; 4. Guido the Gimlet of Ghent: A Romance of Chivalry; 5. The Man in Asbestos: an Allegory of the Future; 6. Sorrows of a Super Soul: or, The Memoirs of Marie Mushenough. 7. A Hero in Homespun: or, The Life Struggle of Hezekiah Hayloft and 8. Caroline's Christmas: or, The Inexplicable Infant. If you enjoy take offs and parodies, the stories in this collection are for you. See how many types you recognize as you listen and laugh. (Summary by phil chenevert)
  • Target completion date: 2012-Dec-31
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4682
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

A note for TriciaG. I cannot hope to match your recordings of Leacock but these stories just insisted that I read them. On seeing them I automatically went into 'recording' mode savoring the amazing irony and silliness and word play. what fun. I am just sorry (or glad) they are new to me since now I get to read ALL of his work. :D

Sorta like discovering Dorothy Sayers at the age of 70. What delicious listening; like finding a whole tray of brownies that need to be eaten.

Ha ha! Have fun with this! This set of stories was really fun. 8-) I think my favorite was the Man in Asbestos.
School fiction: David Blaize
America Exploration: The First Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci
Serial novel: The Wandering Jew
Medieval England meets Civil War Americans: Centuries Apart

You bet. I will never match your wonderful recordings but as soon as I saw these, they just insisted that I read them out loud. I will do them all except the one with Highland accents. I can't do those. as you said .... what fun!!! this guy is amazing.

There is a squeak around 05:04... but all in all Section 1 is PL-OK!
I admit Phil, this made me want to read the whole book :)
Lesson learned: never forget the can opener if you detest the idea of cannibalism :)
How do you upload cd art along with the mp3 btw?

Yes, this is good stuff. You will find your favorite genre of books lampooned in there.

I will check out the squeek. (I think it is my chair when I lean the wrong way )

EDIT: OHHHH that was indeed a nasty scratch or squeek or whatever, inserted by Audacity. Thanks a lot for catching it. As you can tell, I don't go for perfection in my recordings (an understatement), just want them to be understandable and easy to listen to. and fun if possible. But I don't like bumps, 'plosives, creaks, pops and things like that so don't hesitate to tell me about those things. I am uploading the fixed file now.

I don't know how to upload cd art along with the mp3. never done it. Check out the forum thread that deals with cover art; some people do fantastic covers. One of these days I may check it out. ......

The Squeak's gone now...

If I could remember correctly your recording had a cd art, it even said 'spanish doughnuts' with a pink doughnut in black background, something like that... too bad I've already deleted your file... it looked so funny...

Thanks April. You mean when you opened the MP3 file there was art? That is a surprise to me. I certainly never put it there. I just record my MP3 files in Audacity and upload them. Generally it is not until a project is complete and in the catalog that a CD cover or art is put on the catalog link for people who want to make CDs with the files.

Was this another recording? The mystery deepens!! :D

:hmm: I've no idea. So, when you downloaded the 'listen' link, this showed up on your computer? I just tried downloading it and only got the mp3 file. Oh well, it isn't important just very curious.

I have just finished my other solo and will be recording some of this one this week. What funnnnn!
