Hi Anne,

The "Queen of Spades" is 46 minutes long. I will use that Gutenberg link. Thanks for letting me know.

THanks Steve , I'll check before these are catalogued to see if we have a text reference - people like them but it isn't a problem

Here is my link to the uploader: http://upload.lubrivox.org/shared/uploads/arb/shortstory042_newyorker_wjb.mp3.

The story is "The Making of a New Yorker" by O. Henry. Here is the source link:

http://www.gutenberg.org//files/3707/3707.txt

The story is 15 min. long/14.1 MB

The name I want used is Bill Boerst.

EDIT by KiltedDragon: the above link is not correct; here is the link as copied from the uploader files: http://upload.librivox.org/uploads/arb/shortstory042_newyorker_wjb.mp3.mp3

Hi Amy,

The volume on this recording is way too high. The levels are peaked out at maximum for the whole file. You need to turn down your microphone levels some; getting your wave form peaks to average between 0.5 and 1.0 is best. As for this recording, just de-amplify it about -5.0 and that should be good. You also need to have 10 seconds of silence on the end of the file since it is over 30 minutes long. In the ID3 tags, the Album Title should be "Librivox Short Story Collection, Vol. 042"; right now you have the Track title in there.

If you are using Audacity, what version do you have? I was hearing some background noises that made me think you may have noise cleaned the file with Audacity 1.2. Version 1.3 has a much better noise removal tool than version 1.2 so most people upgrade to that.

This is PL OK, though the volume level was a little high; the wave form was pegging at or near 1.0 quite a bit of the time.

Hi Steve,

Unbuilding a Building was good. There are just a couple minor edits needed. The file has a project rate of 48000 but that needs to be changed to 44100 for Librivox recordings. If you used Audacity, open the file and go down to the bottom of the screen and change the Project Rate to 44100 and then export the file again. While exporting it, please remove the underscores from the ID3 tags and make them spaces. You have to use the underscores for the filename but you can use spaces in the ID3 tags. That should do it. :D

Hi Bill,

Your reading was good but we have some technical issues to work on. There were a number of plosives particularly on your p's. Move the microphone more to one side of your mouth so you are talking across the front of it instead of into it. That will reduce the plosives quite a bit. You don't need to re-record this file for that but something to be aware of for the next one. You had 4 seconds silence on the end of the file which is fine this time but normally there should be 5 for recordings under 30 minutes and 10 for files 30 and over.

The bigger problem is the low volume of the file. It was very low for the first 1/3 of the recording and then got louder for the next 1/3 and then very low again for the rest. You can try amplifying each section of that to bring the levels up to an average of 0.5 - 1.0 or there is a program I used on the file which leveled out the volumes and helped reduce the plosives too. It is call the Levelator and can be found here: http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator/ You will need to open the file in Audacity, export is as a wav, drop it into the Levelator, and then open then changed file in Audacity and export it back to an mp3 but it does a really good job at fixing the volume fluctuations.

Let us know if you need any help.

Oh yeah, I added the birth and death dates of O. Henry to the MW.

Barry (who is wondering how Anne gets people to turn in these files in groups like this) :P

Hi Barry,

I think it is good now. I am using 1.3 but I am new to it. I read the wiki noise removal directions and did that to it too. Hope it is better now.

Thanks!

Hi Amy,

I lowered the volume just a little more and everything else was good so it is PL OK now. Head out and find some more to record. Have fun. :D

I have uploaded a redone version of the O.Henry (1862-1910) short story, his "The Making of a New Yorker." Source for the text is http://www.gutenberg.org/files/3707/3707.txt. Length is 14.1 MB or 15 min. The file that came up when I re-uploaded was wjb.20100209143703.mp3.
