Short Story Collection Vol. 042
This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/short-story-collection-vol-042-by-various/

Please select and record any short story in the English Language in the public domain. Try to stick to works that run less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording...as long as the work is clearly in the public domain, just start recording. Multiple versions are always welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your selection already; we're happy to hear your version too. :)
(Only in case of a submission of an identical story for the same collection, we will carry the second version over to the next collection) .

Other collections running at Librivox include: Children's Short Works, Multilingual Short Story collection, Short Horror & Ghost Story Collection, Short Non-Fiction Collection, Short Mystery Story Collection, Short Science-Fiction Collection, Short Poetry Collection, Long Poetry Collection - and Short Works Collections in German, Tagalog or in Dutch. So please select the appropriate collection for your contribution - plenty of choice.

After 20 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

Basic Recording Guide: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/NewbieGuideToRecording
1. RECORD
  • Be sure to set your recording software to: 44100Hz, 16-bit
  • At the BEGINNING Say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
  • At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]"
  • If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."
  • Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording or 10 seconds if longer than 30 minutes.
2. EDIT and SAVE your file:
  • Need noise-cleaning?Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear distracting background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The free beta version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Note: Noisecleaning with other versions of Audacity is not recommended.

4. POST the following information in this thread:

Thanks - the window looks much better with something in it.
We like to post an actual link to the text, could you post the url at classic net ?

Everything else is there , just watch your file name - Audacity sticks .mp3 on the file as you export , so if you put one , we finish up with 2 , and some programs will not accept it. I'll fix it this time , just for next :D

Very good reading but need to fix a couple minor things. The recording is in stereo and needs to be in mono. There is a stumble of the word "irresistable" at 0:41 and a restart at 8:05 of "that was..". The silence at the end of the recording should only be 5 seconds long and the Track Title in the ID3 tags should be "The Lady or the Tiger" instead of the filename.

Here is the edit. It is recorded in mono. I do not understand the problem with the ID tag. The info. on tag has title, author and album as per your request/ Please advise.

Hi Patricia,

When I download the file, it is still opening up in stereo for me. I am not sure how Garageband has the ID3 tags labeled, but in Audacity the one labeled Track Title should say "The Lady or the Tiger". Right now it is showing "shortstory042_theladyorthetiger_ph.mp3" which is the name of the file.

Hi

Thank you for your patience.
Here is a second edited version of The Lady or the Tiger. I made some modifications in iTunes as per the instructions on the Wikihelp page. Please let me know if the ID3 tag is still incorrect.

I recorded in mono and I still cannot explain why it is playing in stereo.

No problem, Patricia. We are here to help. The file was still showing up for me as stereo so I changed it to mono and re-uploaded. Now shows up as mono when I download it. Everything else was A-OK. You did a great job with it and I really enjoyed listening to it; hope to hear more from you. :D

You know, there was a case when another Admin and I were looking at the same file and he PM'ed me that it was in stereo and I opened it and it was in mono. I told him it was in mono and the next day he said he checked and it was still in stereo. I checked again and said "it is mono when I look at it". He wrote back later in the day to say it was now in mono when he looked; we never figured that one out.

Here's "Pigs Is Pigs" by Ellis Parker Butler. I swear I had to cut almost 8 minutes of laughing out of it!

Hi Anne,

I am sending a test before doing a new short story to see if the bugs have been worked out.

Please take a listen when you get a chance.

Thanks!

Here's my contribution: it's an early little oddity by F. Scott Fitzgerald titled "Jemina, the Mountain Girl." It's also probably as close to National Lampoon's as I imagine F. Scott ever got (at least, it is as far as I've read).

My upload: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/arb/shortstory042_jeminathemountaingirl_km.mp3

And my information:

Title: Jemina, the Mountain Girl (from the story collection Tales from the Jazz Age)
Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940)
Source: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/6695
Length of Recording: 10:50 (min:sec)
File size: 9.9 MB

And, assuming the file is okay, as this is my first time (back), please credit me as Kyle M. Thanks so much and can't wait to have a go at another story!

Uh oh--and I can tell you it's not okay, I just realized that I skipped a sentence. I'm re-rendering the file now and I'll upload the new one. Very sorry about that!
