A Letter to Her Husband Absent upon Public Employment

by Anne Bradstreet (1612 - 1672)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/a-letter-to-her-husband-by-anne-bradstreet/

Each fortnight a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

This fortnight’s poem can be found here.

Please be sure that your recording software is set to the following technical specifications:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430
If this is your first recording, you'll also find this useful: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/NewbieGuideToRecording

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
(Please leave no more than 0.5 - 1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!)
A Letter to Her Husband, Absent upon Public Employment by Anne Bradstreet, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]

Then read the poem:

MY head, my heart, mine eyes, my life, nay more,
My joy, my magazine, of earthly store,
If two be one, as surely thou and I,
How stayest thou there, whilst I at Ipswich lie?
So many steps, head from the heart to sever,
If but a neck, soon should we be together.
I, like the Earth this season, mourn in black,
My Sun is gone so far in's zodiac,
Whom whilst I 'joyed, nor storms, nor frost I felt,
His warmth such fridged colds did cause to melt.
My chilled limbs now numbed lie forlorn;
Return; return, sweet Sol, from Capricorn;
In this dead time, alas, what can I more
Than view those fruits which through thy heart I bore?
Which sweet contentment yield me for a space,
True living pictures of their father's face.
O strange effect! now thou art southward gone,
I weary grow the tedious day so long;
But when thou northward to me shalt return,
I wish my Sun may never set, but burn
Within the Cancer of my glowing breast,
The welcome house of him my dearest guest.
Where ever, ever stay, and go not thence,
Till nature's sad decree shall call thee hence;
Flesh of thy flesh, bone of thy bone,
I here, thou there, yet both but one.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave a few seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:
File name - all in lowercase:lettertoherhusband_bradstreet_[your initials].mp3 (eg. lettertoherhusband_bradstreet_klh.mp3)

Here's my go at it.

After I ran the .wav through The Levelator, I got a bit of buzzing. Unfortunate. D:

This recording is my first for LibriVox.

Thank you Claire :D, sorry to take so long to review this :oops:

Welcome to LibriVox rpcvlawson :)
your recording is great for a first :)
However... you are a bit to close to the mic and some breath noise and popping "P's are present.
The file was in stereo and we need mono, I see you are using Garageband, there are notes in the LibriVox wiki on GarageBand.
Unless there is a great variance in the voice levels there is no need to use Levelator for a solo recording, just the originasl mp3 file will do :wink:
I changed the stereo to mono, did some noise removal and added some ending silence for a file duration of 1:54
I hope to hear more from you :)
*Please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the catalog and you can can your personal URL on your catalog page too, if you have one.

Hi aradlaw.

Thanks for the info. I use Audacity, and I've yet to figure out how to record in mono, it seems. I thought I had done so, but clearly I need to work on that.

I'll also make sure to move back from the mic. I did hold it pretty durn close.

I'll make sure to take your feedback into account for my next go. Thanks so much for you time!

For the catalog, can I be listed as L. Lambert Lawson? My url is www.lawrencelawson.net. Do I make these additions or do you?

Wow. Y'all move fast.

Looks like my url has an extra dot [.] at the end. Is there a way to fix that?

To record in Mono in the The Audacity Track Control Panel
The title of the track appears just to the right of the "X". Clicking on the title brings you the Track Pop-Down Menu, allowing you to rearrange tracks and change various track options.
...select Mono in the pull down options. :wink:

Your catalog info is entered, click on your forum name in the Magic Window to view your LV catalog page. This is handy for keeping track of the projects you may be involved in.
Warning... LibriVox can be very addictive. :D
