This project is complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page:
http://www.archive.org/details/harvester_solo_librivox

I would like to record "The Harvester" by Gene Stratton-Porter, solo. The Gutenberg link is http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/9489. (I have done two short stories and submitted them this week).

My goal is to finish by the end of October 2006.

I use Audacity so will edit my files myself and can store the chapters at work until I am done unless someone prefers that I send them to Librivox as I go along. Just let me know.

And tell me if I need to give you any more information.

Hi! Sorry for the slow response, but thanks for taking this project on!

I'll be your MC, so post here or LMK if you have any questions. If possible, please post your files here as you get them done, or send them to me by http://www.yousendit.com to: foxinthestars(at)shininghalf(dot)co(dot)YOO-KAY.

Please keep in touch with your progress! :D

Your PG link took me to Michael O'Halloran, though. The Harvester is here...?

Here's another option for posting your files. I've been able to set up a Librivox Uploader on my new webspace:

http://librivixen.shininghalf.com/
password: pubdomain (enter it right above the "file 01, file 02, etc." boxes)

It may not work in IE, tho.

Thanks Laura,

When I get my first file ready I will try sending it to your new webspace. Otherwise I will use yousendit like I did for my short stories.

Yes, I had forgotten to change the Gutenberg link. I had intended to read Michael O'Halloran but Mary had already signed up for it so I decided to read The Harvester instead.

I recorded the first chapter of The Harvester but discovered there is a background whine coming from the computer (it's there sometimes and not there at other times). I am going to record on a different computer & see if it will work better.

Bye for now

Hi Laura,

I am being slow about getting the 1st chapter sent to you. I re-recorded it on another computer but the computer fan makes a background noise so I don't know if it is acceptable.

I will send you a sample so you can tell me if you think it is ok or if I need to somehow block the noise. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Just a computer fan, it'll probably be okay. Background noise isn't too big of a deal unless it makes the reading hard to understand or is just particularly obtrusive/distracting. I think just about everyone's recordings have some degree of background hiss or such.

How were you going to send the sample? I don't seem to have gotten it yet...

Hi Readaholic,

I've tried (and am still trying) ways to reduce hiss and "scratchiness." My favorite so far is equalization in Audacity. Noise removal always sounds metallic on headphones/earbuds, which is the usual way of listening to our files.

My favorite is the Columbia LP --
highlight (select) the track,
in Effect select Equalization,
select Columbia LP, click Load Predefined Curve, and then OK

That made a big difference to my latest recording. And I prefer whatever hiss remains rather than the metallic sound of Audacity's Noise Removal.

I recommend it.

Thanks for your advice, Anita. I will try it.

Laura,
I will wait to send you some chapters of The Harvester on June 2nd when I go back to work. At home we have a very slow Internet connection and it shows that it would take 2 hours to send a file through yousendit. It goes really fast at work and by then I should have several chapters ready for you.

Hi Laura,
Here is chapter 7 of The Harvester. I have finished chapter 6 but am having trouble getting it to upload into YouSendIt. It goes until the last 8 seconds and then seems blocked. I will try again later to see if it will work.
Bye for now,

Got Ch. 7. Spot-checks sound good as always!

Have you tried the uploader on #6? If neither that or YouSendIt is working yet, LMK.
