This project is now complete. Audio files can be downloaded from the LibriVox catalogue: http://librivox.org/les-miserables-vol-5-by-victor-hugo/

Les Misérables Volume 5, by Victor Hugo. Translated by Isabel Florence Hapgood.

Volume 1: http://librivox.org/les-miserables-vol-1-by-victor-hugo/
Volume 2: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16168
Volume 3: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19203
Volume 4: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21716
This is volume 5 of 5. - An ex-convict breaks parole and starts a new life as a righteous man, but is pursued by a police inspector. Along the way, the ex-convict joins a revolution, adopts a daughter, and beats people up. Hooray. (Summary by smileyman457)
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is 30 September 2010.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/135
Please make sure you read from Volume 5, and pick the correct Book and Chapter!

I have indicated word counts to all sections in the 'Notes' field below. On average, 2000 words generate approx. 15 minutes of final recording time.
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:

    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
Please leave no more than 1s silence at the beginning of the recording.
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Chapter [number] (or chapter x to chapter y) of Book [number] of Les Misérables Volume 5, by Victor Hugo. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"Les Misérables Volume 5, by Victor Hugo. Translated by Isabel Florence Hapgood. Book [number]: [Title of Book]. (If you have multiple chapters, insert here: Chapters x to y). -- Chapter [number]: [Title of Chapter]"
(Please note: if your section contains more than one chapter, only read this intro once at the beginning. After you've read your first chapter, pause for a few seconds, then just start the next chapter with 'Chapter x, [Title of chapter]')
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
End of Book [number], Chapter [number] (or chapters x to y)."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Les Misérables Volume 5 (of 5), by Victor Hugo. Translated by Isabel Florence Hapgood."
    Example intro/outro: section 08:
[Leave no more than 1s silence]
"Chapters 14 to 15 of Book 1 of Les Misérables Volume 5, by Victor Hugo. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org. -- Recording by yyyy. -- Les Misérables Volume 5, by Victor Hugo. Translated by Isabel Florence Hapgood. Book 1: 'Jean Valjean', Chapters 14 to 15. -- Chapter 14:'Wherein will appear the name of Enjolras' Mistress.'"
[Read chapter 14, pause a couple of seconds.]
    "Chapter 15: 'Gavroche Outside.'"
[Read chapter 15, pause a couple of seconds.]
"End of Book 1, Chapters 14 to 15."
[Leave 5s silence if recording under 30 mins, otherwise leave 10s]
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    lesmiserables_vol5_##_hugo.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. lesmiserables_vol5_03_hugo.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: [Section title, please copy from the Title column in the list above], e.g. Bk 01 Ch 01-04
    Artist: Victor Hugo, transl. Hapgood
Album: Les Miserables Volume 5 (please note, no accent!)

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: ge - Gesine
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. :)

This last volume of Les Mis is going to be recorded as a sort of solo/collaboration - clashbunny and his family will do this as a Christmas project as Les Miserables, and this volume in particular, has a lot of special remembrances and meaning to various family members.

I shall add the readers and chapter titles in a little bit.

This project is not open to other readers, and will be moved to Readers Found tomorrow.

Kehinde is the DPL.

You're welcome. Would you update your spreadsheet to indicate reader per section, please, and let me know when it's done?

Let me know if this sounds OK. I forgot to say libravox is public domain and "chapter 1" at the end. Do I need to go back and do it over or can I add that to the file?

Hello everyone, glad to see some files coming in. I'll respond in detail to these further down; also to Alice's test.

For future test recordings, please do this:

You may want to send a sample recording of a minute or so, to make sure the sound quality etc is all right - often things can be improved at the outset that are difficult to fix later. To do this, first upload your test recording:
  • Upload your file (call it "test_yourname.mp3") with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please copy it):
    http://upload.librivox.org
    Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
In Step 1 you'll need to select the MC, which for this purpose is: tests - tests at the bottom of the list
  • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
Now please go to the Listeners and Editors Wanted forum and start a new thread (click 'New Topic' at the top left of your screen). For subject, put something like "CC - Titleofrecording by Author" (CC stands for constructive criticism) and include in the message: the link to your file and what type of feedback you would like to receive. Please note: In order to keep this forum current, requests for feedback on test recordings and similar individual files will be deleted ~ one month after they are first posted.

Hi Alice, and welcome to LibriVox. I've posted your test in the Listeners Wanted forum; please check for feedback there:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=423563#423563

Please also note that filenames on LibriVox may not contain spaces; I've edited yours thus:

Please read the first post of this thread carefully before recording a chapter.
