still struggling with the background humm issues. But i think this is somewhat better than section 17. When i do get this problem sorted out perhaps i will reread section 17 as it was very short.

can i claim a few more sections?

hugh mac - thank you for the recording. The sound quality, as you said, is still not much improved and it would be great to get this better before the next recordings. As you said, your first section was very short - perhaps you could use this to experiment until the sound is better, before you move on to longer sessions?

I don't know what setup you use - if you're not using a USB mic, I'd strongly suggest trying one, as this might solve the hum. You can pick up a Logitech USB 250 headset quite cheaply at amazon if you're in the US.

If you are using a USB mic already, the best thing might be to post a message in the 'Help Wanted' forum to see if someone can come up with a solution or some things to try.

I will ask one of our special sound editors to have a go at section 18 to see how much it can be improved. If you do this, you might post this link to your chapter 17 so people can listen to it: http://librivox.gesine.org/coordination/boethius/consolationphilosophy_17_boethius.mp3

Wow, hugh mac - world of difference. Thanks so much. What did you do? It's brilliant now. Only thing is that it's a little on the quiet side (we can amplify, no problem) - can you check if your input volume is turned all the way up? Always best to fix these things during recording if you can.

I got a new sound card and this seems to have solved the problem. CAD 15.00, much cheeper than a USB mic. Apparently onboard sound cards, such as i had, are terrible for recording.

However, by playing around and experimenting with certain setting i have just discovered that i made this file rather worse than the previous one. And not only that, but it does not seem like i made it any louder, which was the reason i was playing around with settings in the first place.

what do you think? is it passable?

Gesine's pretty busy moving house, so I'll grab these three recent files (2, 3, 19) and mark them Done in the first post. Hugh Mac, I don't have time to listen to yours right now, but I'm sure Gesine will advise you when she has a spare minute :)

edit: I'm having trouble downloading them. I'm sure they'll come through eventually, but please keep your files on your local computers just in case!
