The General History of the Pyrates, Vol. 1 by Charles Johnson

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/a-general-history-of-the-pyrates-vol-1-by-charles-johnson/
A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates is a 1724 book containing biographies of contemporary pirates. It's author uses the name Captain Charles Johnson, generally considered a pseudonym.

The real identity of the author was thought by some scholars to be Daniel Defoe, although this has since been disputed. The publisher Nathaniel Mist or somebody working for him are other suggested authors.

In the first volume, "Johnson" sticks fairly close to the available sources, though he embellishes the stories somewhat. Nevertheless, the book was influential in shaping popular notions of piracy and provided the standard account of the lives of many individuals still famous in the 21st century.
(Summary by Wikipedia)
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: January 2011 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. Please note that if we haven't heard from you for two months, your section(s) will automatically be re-opened for other readers. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://digital.lib.ecu.edu/historyfiction/fullview.aspx?id=joh
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    titleinoneword_##_authorsurname.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. historyofpyrates_01_johnson.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

The book itself has some problems in that some of the chapter numbers are missing and some of them are used more than once. Also, Daniel Defoe has been given credit for writing this in the past but that is now being refuted and debated. I used the Defoe name for now, but I think we would be better off giving credit to the author name originally listed on the book, even though it may be a fake. There is no way of knowing who actually wrote the book.

Ello there

I would be willing to MC this book (I love complicated long books >.<), but before I set it up, I guess we should agree upon the author name.

In the light of what you said and what I read, I think we're better off using the name stated in the book. Being it a pseudonym or not, we have no certainty of any other name but that one. So, if agreed, I will put it in the database simply as "Charles Johson".

Also, a question: how do you intend to assign the pages in the MW, so it is clear what people should be reading? And how are you dividing the sections?

Thanks :)

Hi Leni,

Thanks for offering to MC this one; it is not an easy book by any means. I think we are agreed then that we should use Charles Johnson as the author; I will change the OP to show that (sorry about that Mr. Defoe).

As for the MW, I spent quite a bit of time yesterday going through the book, getting estimated word counts, and dividing up the sections into more manageable pieces. I have a list made out on how I want to split everything up but I left it at home and I am currently at work. :( I had to split most of the chapters up into parts (the chapter on Capt. Roberts has 11 or 12 parts) and even the introduction had to be split into 2 parts. Altogether, there are 41 or 42 sections; I won't know for sure which it is until I retrieve my notes at home. I will list sentences where each reader is to start and stop for the chapters that are split into parts.

One of my other concerns is the missing and re-used chapter numbers. The table of contents shows chapters 1-16; however, in the book itself, the chapters are labeled 1-7, 9, 11-16, and 17 is used twice. For the sake of simplicity and also for the listener to follow along correctly, I would suggest using the chapter numbers as listed in the table of contents and not those at the beginning of each chapter.

Ok, I am seting this up now.

There is no rush, I am sure we can wait for you to get home and post the sections and all. I agree we should use the numbers as stated in the table of contents, and I suppose that having the pages stated in the MW, as well as warnings about the mislabelling, it shouldn't be too complicated.

One more section up.

I'll let this hang around here for one more day, to see if we attract a DPL, and then we go to Readers Wanted. :)

Hi Magdalena,

Welcome aboard the ship! In case you have not looked, this is not an easy book so some of the readers may have problems with words, etc. Should be easier listening but even then some of the wording may be troublesome.

Yay, pirates! I'd please like to take sections 7 and 8 - all of Chapter 3. I have a special affinity for Blackbeard. The Bogue Sound area of NC is one of my favorite places on earth, and I hope to move there some day. I've seen some of the salvage from the Queen Anne's Revenge in the North Carolina Maritime Museum. (I know I didn't have to tell you all that to get the part, I'm just excited). :D
