This project is continuing in a new thread: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3707

I and, it seemed, several other members were fascinated by Shurtagal's mathematical solo projects, so here's one for a collaboration:

The Golden Mean, aka Phi.

Dating back to ancient times when it was much admired by the Greeks as I understand, The Golden Mean divides an amount into two unequal parts, such that the ratio of the smaller part to the larger is equal to the ratio of the larger part to the whole. It is also reflected in the Fibonacci Sequence; above the 14th number, The Golden Mean is the ratio of any number in the Sequence to the previous number.

This web page gives a pretty good quick overview:
http://www.astridfitzgerald.com/goldenmean.htm

Of course there's Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio

And here is the Project Gutenberg e-text we'll be working from:
http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/744

As you can see, one million digits is not a "short work" as such, but I put it in this forum because I'm dividing it up into claimable sections of only fifty digits each, which you'll find posted directly here in the thread, below. I'll be editing the submissions together, and each mp3 will be a block of 1,000 digits.

So go ahead and claim one or two! :D

Claim the blue "numbers" --- that is, the sequence of four letters that begins every section. When you record, please read these numbers at the beginning, to help me double check that I'm stitching them together correctly.

NOTE: Because of the nature of the project and the brevity of the sections, claims are only good for 48 hours.

The Third Thousand Decimal Places - Coming Soon!

New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

BEFORE recording:
Please check the Recording Notes:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

Set your recording software to:
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz

DURING recording:

The Intro and Outro will be taken care of on my end, so for this project you need only read:

FIRST - Your name as (and if) you wish it to appear in the disclaimer section, optionally including location and/or personal URL. These will all be edited together into a list preceding the number sequence. If you claim multiple sections within a given thousand digits, you need only record this on the first.

SECOND - The four-letter designation of your section. PLEASE be sure to read this before EVERY section, even if you claim and read more than one together.

THIRD - The fifty digits in your section. Take it easy and read the numbers clearly, and leave a little breath-pause every several digits. (I added spaces to the text because it makes it easier to keep track of when reading; the same is true when listening.) When you're finished, PLEASE double-check your reading for accuracy!

And that's it; as I said, I'll take care of the rest.

Multiple Sections - I thought fifty would be a small enough bite for anyone, but it may seem overly small for some. If so, just claim multiple sections. You can combine them in a single mp3. They don't even have to be consecutive, although that would be easier. Just BE SURE to record the identifying four letters before EACH fifty-digit section.

AFTER recording:
Save files as
128 kbps MP3
phi_####.mp3 , all lower-case, where #### is the four blue letters. (If combining multiple sections into one mp3, just name it after the first one; for example, a single file containing sections aaac through aaae should be named "phi_aaac.mp3")

ID3 V2 tags
Not important; I'll take care of them in the editing phase.

Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Here are three basic options for sending in your files:
  1. Post them on your own webspace and link to them there
  2. Post them to our "LibriBox" upload utility and holding space here:
    http://librivixen.shininghalf.com
    password: pubdomain
You can then link to it at librivixen.shininghalf.com/uploader/files/[your filename]
  3. Send them via YouSendIt.com to foxinthestars(at)shininghalf(dot)co(dot)YOO-KAY. This will generate a link which you can post.
Whichever of these options you use, please reply below and post a link to your file. This safeguards against your submission being lost in case of e-mail crashes and such. If you can't get any of this to work, just say so; help is available.

Not yet sure how we'll handle catalog info on this one; probably easiest would just be a "various" designation and leave the credits to the disclaimer in the file, but LMK if you have better ideas!

Hope you enjoy it!
Please post below or PM me with any questions. Thanks so much for your help! ^__^

And here it is. That was certainly nice and quick. I thought about doing it in a silly voice or something, but decided to go for "serious mathematical voice" in the end..... the fact that I spent time considering this may or may not be a sign of mental unrest. :-}

Laura,

Do you think we need any guidance in terms of pace?

Say, roughly one digit per second?

Laura, I've put this in the "To Come" section on the catalog page.... This is really great! An excellent practice for new readers too =)

Let me know if there is anything else you need me to do while you're collecting the files =)

Got it, Alys. Thank you! You didn't say your name, tho. If you want it to appear, you can send me an mp3 of it, or say it at the beginning next time you claim a line.

Earthcalling - I'm not so concerned about that as long as it's understandable. The one thing I would recommend is a short pause every several digits, like where I added spaces. The spaces don't mean anything, but they make it easier to keep track of as you read, and probably easier to keep track of as you listen, too.

Betsie - Thank you! :D

Hello,
I would like to record the next available section of the Golden Mean.

I have an idea!!!

Artist On Kawara produced a body of work that is of considerable relevance to the Golden Mean recordings called One Million Years (past and present). Produced in book form, Kawara lists one million years with two versions of the book, past and present. Kawara presents the actual books as functional art objects that would be displayed in a gallery. In addition the books are read. One Millioan Years offers an excellent opportunity for the LibriVox community to participate in an ongoing art project.

Specific legal concerns are unknown to me presently, however I am willing to take on the role of curating/organizing this recording.

Thank You

--Jules

Legal concerns are, we can't do anything that isn't in the Public Domain. General rule of thumb, if it's been written since 1922, it's not kosher.

Can you link to a source for One Million Years so we can have a look?

Chris, yes it is still available, and it's yours.

Contemporary art, I forgot to mention, I put you down for aaac.

Remember claims on this one only last 48 hours; if you need longer, LMK.

All done aaad. It's here -> http://download.yousendit.com/F073C8147DE81987

I have to say, I never thought it'd be quite so challenging to read a string of numbers. (I just didn't want it to sound boring, you know?)

Got it, Chriss. Sounds good!

I should have been more clear though, I was going to assemble everyone's names in a list at the beginning and eventually edit out the letters, so you might want to do a different version of your name to fit that format better. I'll edit the original post with that, because I realise I hadn't explained it...
