Kara, my three poems:

Abou ben Adhem - Leigh Hunt
The Last Rose of Summer - Thomas Moore

are from Poems Every Child Should Know, Ed Mary E Burt, Gutenberg etext number 16436

Jenny kissed me - also Leigh Hunt ... I culled from the internet, but he lived from 1784-1859

Peter, would you be able to send me your three poems? Your yousendit links have expired and I don't want to pester Hugh if I don't need to. I think I have everyone else's files except for Brad's.

Er, here's what I have so far on my own computer:

because_I_could_not_stop_for_death_dickinson.mp3
dead_boche_graves.mp3
dulce_et_decorum_owen.mp3
good_news_from_ghent_browning.mp3
raven.mp3 (figured we'd include that one too)
poe_telltale_heart.mp3
shadow_stevenson_hf.mp3
whitman_artilleryman.mp3

So if anyone sent anything else to Hugh, or if I missed anything, let me know . Thanks!

My pleasure .. a bit of a shock seeing yousendit working properly!

I've recorded one of my favourites today: Coleridge's Kublai Khan, but I'll hold it for the next volume, as I'm running out of poems. I really must get to the library for a volume of miscellaneous poetry, to spread my net.

Here's a favorite Dickinson poem of mine:

Thanks, Annie, that makes twelve poems. Think we can make it to 20 before the end of December?

It's hard to find poetry on Gutenberg unless you know what author you want, so here's a link to a "one of the largest free collections of verse on the web."

http://www.bartleby.com/verse/

Hope that provides some inspiration. Feel free to do something non-English. I still have some Rilke memorized from my college German class...

Kara, thank you for posting that link... it reminded me to look up Carl Sandburg in PG... shockingly, he isn't yet represented there!

oh, i just had an idea for the short poetry collections... we might consider having themes for these collections... the possiblities are endless, as usual.

Oh that'd be fun. Love poems for Valentine's day, a springtime collection, patriotic for the Glorious Fourth, etc. Great idea!

Ahhhh Sandburg. Thanks for pointing him out.

Ok, just to prove that I can read poetry seriously (even if I don't take it seriously hehe)

... here is "Laughing Corn" by Carl Sandburg:

Kara, since you're after a few more, I'm sending Kublai Khan via yousendit. I'll just have to search around for new poems for the next volume.

I've just found that yousendit now gives you the link to your file again ... perhaps it had been lost during the changeover. So here you go:

http://s44.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=09NUVSZIBLTPT210L46WHLGPD5

Talking of masturbation, a subject that seems to have cropped up a couple of times on the forum, how about putting poems of our own writing up for others to read (ones that we are willing to see in the public domain)? (Somewhere in Robert Heinlein's "Time enough for Love" is the aphorism: "People who read their own poetry aloud in public may have other unpleasant vices" ... so no reading your own!)

... or, perhaps a volume specifically composed of home-written poems .... and short stories?
