Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters.

Many thanks to Alys for suggesting this poetry classic! She said it well:
Alys wrote:This is a collection of poems, in the form of an entire community speaking from beyond the grave about their lives, and, in some cases, gossiping about their neighbors' lives. It's interesting to see how other people perceive a particular character, and how that character responds to that.

A summary I found online says it's a "collection of post-mortem autobiographical epitaphs, 244 former citizens of the fictional Spoon River, Illinois tell us the truth about their liveswith the honesty no fear of consequences enables."
Target completion date of this project: 15-January-2007 ...FIRM! =)

To lend your voice, just follow the steps...

This is so great, thanks for doing it, Fox, and thanks for the suggestion Alys! I didn't know this before and love it.

May I be Mrs Benjamin Pantier (who is currently missing before Reuben Pantier) and Serepta 007?

Following your request, I'll also look through the list of poems to see if you've got all the others! :)

You're welcome, and sure thing! I'll fix that... (I knew I'd made at least one mistake in that huge list... ^_^; )

I would like to be Lucinda Matlock (which was the poem I read, er, probably ten years ago now, in school, which led me to track down and purchase the entire collection. Because I was a book nerd, even then.)

Also, I've discovered that the Bartleby listing here:

http://www.bartleby.com/84/index1.html

has quick links to all of the individual poems. It might be a bit quicker than the Gutenberg text, which would require scrolling or alt-f'ing to find the correct poem.

Sorry, Alys, but Gesine already claimed Serepta Mason. I will put you down for Lucinda Matlock, tho.

Thanks for the Bartleby link! I'll add that to the first post. (Might be handy to check my own contents list against as well.)

Comparing the lists, I think the PG e-text may in fact be incomplete, so I'll use Bartleby as the source instead and try to get the list in order...

It's fine, I can give up Serepta if Alys would like to read her!

Laura, there are two people missing:

Mrs Benjamin Pantier (before Reuben Pantier)
Barney Hainsfeather (after Russian Sonia - there's a mistake in the e-book and the title Barney looks like the last line of Sonia)

Do you want to renumber and update them before we claim more?

Sorry, didn't see the earlier posts as I was busy comparing! :) The Bartleby list does look different - perhaps you should take the Gutenberg link out? Some titles are different as well I think - is Malloy a Reverend in PG and a Father in Bartleby?

I'll read Mrs Benjamin Pantier and come back later for more :)

As long as you don't mind waiting for me to work on this after the wedding, and after I've completed some other chapters I have claimed, I would really like to do five of these. I don't care which, you can give me five females of your choosing :)

That's fine Gesine, that's my fault - and it's not like there aren't a lot of others to choose from! Somehow I interpreted Septa 007 as being the last name, instead of the obviousness of the number. Sigh. I realized almost immediately, and edited my original post (that's why the request isn't there anymore) but you people are just too quick for me!

I'll take Edith Conant instead.

I'm not sure why the Bartleby and Gutenberg are different. Maybe PG had an abbreviated copy?

Okay, have got the list synchronised with the Bartleby version. Unlike the PG one, it actually matches the number of citizens Alys's source described, so I think we're good to go now.

Alys - Put you down for Edith Conant. Thanks!

Gesine - since Alys said it was okay, I'm leaving Serepta in your hands.

Kri - no problem waiting for your happy occasion! ^_^ I'll put you down for the following (just chosen at random except Emily):
017 - Emily Sparks
051 - Lois Spears
097 - Eugenia Todd
136 - Mrs. Purkapile
199 - Caroline Branson

OK so just to confirm, I'll do 007 and 015, for which I'm down already. Thanks, Alys and Laura.

That's right, Gesine. :)

BTW, the Epilogue is marked "Pending" while I, er, try to figure out how to handle it. The PG e-text didn't include it so it kind of took me by surprise, and it's a play, complete with stage directions and featuring such "characters" as The Milky Way and Infinite Depths. I need to look at it more fully... Probably best would be to assign roles and do it as a drama (I think I'm a fair shakes at editing and could probably assemble it), although I'll also admit a temptation to just omit it, since PG did that and it, er, seems pretty trippy... 0_o;

But anyway, I would welcome any suggestions regarding the Epilogue.
