Shirley by Charlotte Brontë (21. April 1816-31. March 1855 ).

Miss Stav and I will Co- BC this project!

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

http://librivox.org/shirley-by-charlotte-bronte/

Shirley is an 1849 social novel by the English novelist Charlotte Brontë. It was Brontë's second published novel after Jane Eyre (originally published under Brontë's pseudonym Currer Bell). The novel is set in Yorkshire in the period 1811–1812, during the industrial depression resulting from the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. The novel is set against a backdrop of the Luddite uprisings in the Yorkshire textile industry... (Summary by Wikipedia )[will be refined later on]
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: March 2010 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. Please note that if we haven't heard from you for two months, your section(s) will automatically be re-opened for other readers. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/b/bronte/charlotte/shirley/
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

    MAGIC WINDOW

    (BC admin link)
  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:

    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
Please leave no more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!

Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Chapter [number] of Shirley - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
      "Shirley, by Charlotte Brontë [Chapter]"
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Shirley by Charlotte Brontë ]."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    shirley_##_bronte.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. shirley_01_bronte.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: ## - [Section title]
    Artist: Charlotte Bronte
    Album: Shirley

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: jo - knotyouraveragejo
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. :)

Here I am. I am so happy that you have been able to set it up so soon. Looking forward to working with you on this project. This is a discontinued solo, so section 1 is already recorded and pled. I guess one of the edmens will be able to bring the recorded section 1 to the magic window when he/she set up this project.

Elli & Stav,

You are all set up here. You might also like to know that there are 90 people signed up to be notified when this is finished! I'm sure they will all be glad that you have decided to start this up again as a collaborative project. :)

One note: It's generally best not to use accented characters in the ID3 tags since they get all scrambled up into gibberish when we upload them to archive.org.

Let me know if you need anything,

Jo

Ch. 2 pt. 1 complete, 16:22

CC welcome; I wonder if it needs de-amplification (usually I err on the side of quiet, but may have overcompensated this time).

Hi Maja!

Thanks so much! MW updated!

Just listened to a short bit of your recording.... really lovely reading!!! The volume seems absolutely fine to me (perhaps a little on the quiet side...) :D

Wow! It was pretty close to blaring to me; I had to de-amplify whole sections (and this with the earphone volume turned down very low...I guess I should just put it on 0.1 to get a proper sense of how it'll sound to the rest of the world).
Shall I amplify the file and re-upload?

Hi Maja!

I find it really hard to judge if a file is loud enough too... I mostly go by the spikes that are shown in Audacity. When they range between 0.5 and 1 it usually is fine! :)

Acutally I don't think it's necessary to amplify and reupload... your volume is fine (only on the borderline of being too quiet, as far as I can tell.... but the file still needs proper PLing, I've only had time to listen to a short bit so far!)

My recording usually are rather quiet. I mostly use the Levelator. It does a wonderful job smoothing out small volume changed and does a great job amplifying the files without getting clipping or anything! (The downside is that it only works with .wav files... but I think the few extra steps required are worth it. ;))

I'm really looking forward to your next recording! :D

Ch. 2 pt. 2, complete. 17:24

(PS: Sorry these are taking so long. There's a lot of fiddling as the chapters are quite long)

PPS: I tried the Levelator--several times--but it went up to a certain percentage and then gave an error message. Bummer.
