You can upload it to the test folder using the upload instructions in the first post. Then post the link that comes up when the download is done.

Some stammers, etc. you can edit out. Others you can just read the phrase again and edit out the mistake.

I'll update your catalog page.

Ok, I have uploaded my test for audio equipment quality. My Audacity didn't seem to have the recommended settings mentioned under the magic window.

It's in the MP3 export preferences. On the screen that comes up to save as an MP3, where you put in the file name and select the MP3 format, before clicking OK, click on Options. It's in there - should be set to Constant mode, and 128 kbps quality.

(I haven't listened to it; just checked the tech specs. I'm really tired, so I'll check the rest in the morning.)

I've been doing some more reading on the forum and various FAQs (which I should have done before... sorry!) and saw the test recording faq. Should I just do my test over now that I know a little more about Audacity? Or should I post what I did to listeners wanted for feedback? Thanks!

It's up to you. If you think your test will be better now, go ahead and redo it. And you can either post it here or in Listeners Wanted; either place it'll receive a listen.

I just listened to part of your recording. Sorry it took me so long.

First, nice voice and good reading.

- The bit rate as mentioned in the previous posts needs changing. (This isn't optional; it's how archive.org requires us to submit the files so they can derive other formats from it.)

- It's too quiet. You'll need to either get closer to the mic or increase your mic input volume in Windows. (If you're using Vista, right click on the volume icon in the task bar and select Recording Devices. Double click on your microphone and select the Levels tab that comes up. Slide up the slider - I've got mine at 80, but you'll need to experiment with your own for optimum volume.) Your wave forms should mostly peak between the .5 and 1.0 marks in the Audacity window.

- You've got some background noise. It's not much, but if you do a straight amplify on your file, it gets to be quite noticeable. Once you up your mic volume we can see how bad it is, but feel free to experiment with the NOISE CLEANING in Audacity.

Go ahead and make adjustments, then post a new sample. It can be shorter - a minute or two is plenty.

Thanks so much for the constructive feedback. I'll put together a test using these corrections, hopefully this evening. I've always been really intimidated by audio/video stuff. Seems like rocket science almost so I appreciate the guidance. Hopefully I will get things fine-tuned so I can start on my section for Foxe's.

Great! Tech specs are all correct. You could actually turn down your input volume a bit. We don't want you clipping (having your wave forms get distorted by maxing out).

At 0:56, 1:32, 1:45 you had a minor stumble:
"went later to..to Andover"
"that...that the country"
"such that the more...more"
which would probably be easy edits - just find them, highlight them, and delete them.

Just letting you know the type of stumble/repeat we often point out. They're not severe, so you could probably get away with leaving them in if you so chose.

Go forth and record!

Thanks for the feedback. I thought my stumbles were pretty bad in this test. I'm going to for now use the excuse that I was having trouble reading it because I was not using my additional monitor at the time but when I settle in to actually read "for reals" I will have my audacity up on one screen and my reading up on the other. Oh, and I will also edit out my stammers and restarts and turn my mic volume down a couple notches.

It was at 70.
