Clarissa - Volume 1 by Samuel Richardson.

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

http://librivox.org/clarissa-or-the-history-of-a-young-lady-vol-1-by-samuel-richardson

Clarissa Harlowe, the tragic heroine of Clarissa, is a beautiful and virtuous young lady whose family has become very wealthy only in recent years and is now eager to become part of the aristocracy by acquiring estates and titles through advantageous pairings. Clarissa's relatives attempt to force her to marry a rich but heartless man (Roger Solmes) against her will and, more importantly, against her own sense of virtue. Desperate to remain free, she is tricked by a young gentleman of her acquaintance, Lovelace, into escaping with him. However, she refuses to marry him, longing — unusual for a girl in her time — to live by herself in peace. (Summary by Wikipedia)

Welcome to LibriVox! What an ambitious project! Ambition is good, but there are a few things to do first. To start, you will each need a forum registration unless you each have one already. Forum names are how we keep track of your recordings in the database. Second, you should each record one or a few shorter things for collaborative projects before you start this. I say this not to discourage you but from experience: there are sometimes technical problems with first recordings, and it is much better to find out that something is wrong on a short recording than a long one. Also, a book is a big undertaking (this one is a gigantic undertaking) and it's good to get an idea of what's involved before you commit yourself. Contributing to other projects will also familiarize you with Librivox policies, things like file naming and bit rates and so on.

Once you've gotten your feet wet, then you can get going on this project. You will need to fill in some items in the first post template (like the Gutenberg text link, how the intro/ending will be read, filenames, ID tags). Volume 1 would most likely be the first project; all the rest would follow as separate "books." (That's as it is in Gutenberg.)

THEN (deep breath) an MC will come along, set this up in the database, and guide you along. In the meantime, if you have any questions please do ask! We're glad you're here!

Thank you for your comments. I'm registered on the forums as "assilem23" and my friend who will be reading Clarissa with me will be signing up shortly.

Apart from a few techy points on how you do things here we've both had experience recording before. My friend used to record books for the blind (he did Moby Dick by himself once before) and I've recorded some things for BBC Radio before. I'll say to him he might want to read a chapter of something else for you first and I'll find something shortly (I'm waiting for a new microphone as the last one got battered about too much and died). But we've been reading books aloud for a little while now so feel quite comfortable with it.

Our main problem is with the computer tagging for the site - my friend isn't tech savvy at all with computers (he's good on recording studio stuff, not not the Internet) and I know a lot, but it's just making sure we do things your way.

Any questions or comments just ask. I'll sort out the original template - I did it in ten minutes before work so it was kinda rushed.

Woo! I was looking forward to this book being librivoxed. Not quite brave enough to do it myself.

Terrific, assilem23! Sounds like this'll be old hat for you. Lots of our volunteers had never recorded seriously (some of us, not at all) before finding Librivox. Have fun with this!

I'll be uploading the first few letters next week so I need to sort out some listeners etc.

We're making good headway with this and expect to have finished the first volume in a fortnight or so.

assilem23,

I'll MC Part 1 for you. I think someone earlier in this thread suggested that the best way to handle this book would be to catalog each part individually rather than wait until all 539 chapters are recorded. Once you finish Part 1, you can immediately set up a second project for Part 2, and so on. Therefore, I will enter Part one in the database for you and be back shortly to set up a magic window, etc.

Also since you are reading this as a duet, this thread will move to Readers Found once everything is all set up. Has your friend who will be reading this with you signed up on the forums yet? He will need a forum name in order to assign the appropriate sections to each of you in the database.

OK I've added the magic window and fixed up the top post as noted below. To edit the magic window, you will need a username and password, which I will send you by PM along with a link to the instructions in the wiki.

I've added the link to the gutenberg text for volume 1.

I've suggested what I think would be appropriate filenames and ID3 tags for this project.

I've added the basic prooflistening criteria above the magic window. If you would like a different level of prooflistening, please see this thread for other options http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3628 and then edit in the top post of this thread accordingly.

I've also filled in the text of the intros and outros that need to be included on each file you submit.

When you are ready to upload your files, please use the librivox uploader and upload to my MC folder. If you have any problems using the uploader, please let me know.

Also, let me know if you have any other questions as you go along. Looking forward to working with you both on this project.

Jo

BTW, I've entered your catalog name in the database as Ben Dutton. If I've got that reversed, let me know so I can correct it!

My friend recorded the first two without knowing the requirements needed at the beginning of each file so I spliced it with later recordings where he was - if he needs to redo them let me know and I'll ask him. He's recorded every letter that is not one of Clarissa Harlowe's and will continue in this fashion throughout. He has yet to get an account, I'll be sorting him out one in a moment, and hopefully he'll sign himself in soon.
We've recorded a fair amount so far - I hope it's okay - and here are the links from the uploader for what we have. Looking forward to your comments, criticisms and complaints! (Hopefully not too many of the last two!)

Great to see you've made so much progress on this volume! It would be helpful if you could also post the run times of the files as that is the easiest way to tell if everything has fully uploaded and helps PLers choose which files they have time to listen to.

On that note, I can post a request for you in Listeners Wanted to see if we can get a dedicated prooflistener for this project.

If you could post in the listeners wanted page, that would be great. I tried looking into doing it but couldn't figure out how you set the pages up etc... told you, not 'net savvy.

On that note: I think I've done the admin thing correctly now - I hope!

I'll drop by here later with the run times for each file - I knew there was something I forgot to add to yesterdays mass upload - but please be patient with me. I'm working from within a university system and we're all still on Easter Holidays here so access to the internet isn't 24/7 for me at the moment.

Thanks.

You are doing fine! I've fixed up a couple of reader assignments for you based on the files I have so far and marked the uploaded files complete. You can add the durations directly into the notes field in the magic window. I've done the first one for you as an example.

I'll also post a request in Listeners Wanted for a prooflistener a little later today. I have to work on my taxes this afternoon. :(

Ben,

Looks like you've mastered the magic window. I've posted in Listeners Wanted for you, but if we get a dedicated prooflistener, I can delete that thread and you can do all the posting in this one.

Also as I think I mentioned in an earlier post, since this is not technically a "solo," I am going to move this thread to Readers Found where we work on group projects that are fully subscribed. I'll wait until you have seen this post though so you don't wonder where the thread went next time you come looking for it. :)

Hi There! I saw Jo's post over on listeners wanted, and I wanted to volunteer to proof-listen for you.

I did have a question on what you're looking for. I see that you're asking for standard listening. I'm willing to listen against the text, but if you don't want that kind of feedback I won't give it.

I think we're just after standard listening for this project. I'm confident that the reading is accurate. I'm more concerned with my pace, tone etc. Thanks for your assistance zinniz, looking forward to working with you.

Might not be here for a while as my internet access seems to have been temporarily (I hope!) cut off!
