This project is complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page:

At the Back of the North Wind
by George MacDonald

We are in proof-listening phase! Check here:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6482

At the Back of the North Wind is lovely. Old Diamond the horse... young Diamond who isn't stupid... and the North Wind, who is beautiful and terrible...
Yes, it's an odd book with old-fashioned Victorian morals, but it's a wonderful children's story.
So how about it? Takers? There are 38 chapters -- plenty to go around!

New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: Sept 1st, 2006, but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
*** NEW TARGET COMPLETION DATE: April 1, 2007 ***

BEFORE recording:
Please check the Recording Notes:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

Sample rate
1. 44.1KHz is the default sample rate in lots of software. We like getting files at this rate.
2. Some know-it-all told us that 32KHz sounds better. If you know how, try to use this rate.
3. We want to make this easy, so we'll take any rate from 22 to 44.1KHz, if you need us to.
4. Please don't use 48KHz or anything under 22KHz. If you accidentally send us something at these rates, our uploaders will resample it for you and advise you on how to record at a sample rate we can use. Don't worry, your work will never be wasted!

DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
Start of recording (Intro)
"This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

Say:
"At the Back of the North Wind, by George MacDonald. [Chapter]"

End of recording
At the end of the section, say:
End of [Chapter]"

At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of At the Back of the North Wind, by George MacDonald."
Please leave three seconds of silence at the end of your recording!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

AFTER recording:
Save files as
128 kbps MP3
northwind_#_macdonald.mp3 , all lower-case, where # is your chapter number.
(Example: northwind_01_macdonald.mp3)

ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: northwind_#_macdonald
Artist: George MacDonald
Album: At the Back of the North Wind

Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Files can either be posted here in the forum (link to your webspace) or emailed via http://yousendit.com to: amhughes@fas.harvard.edu (if you use yousendit, it's helpful if you'll post the resulting link in this thread)

NEW! You can also upload your chapters directly via Rainer's new uploading gizmo at
http://librivox.prolegomena.org/
password: public
This is nifty and definitely the preferred method!

I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
- your name as you want it to appear in the LibriVox catalog,
- your webpage URL (if applicable)
- the runtime of the recording in format hh:mm:ss

Do you have questions?
Please post below or PM me.

So, err... start claiming chapters! I guess I'll go first... :-)

Hello Meredith,
I'm sure you get a lot of readers for children's literature. Just go on and put down your id3-tag information. I will meta-coordinate you and I'm curious about this book full of "old-fashioned Victorian morals"! :D

Great, we were just looking for another children's lit book in Readers Wanted!

You can find ready-made templates for the intro thread here, Meredith: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/ProjectTemplatesForBookCoordinators

Wonderful!

I've never read any MacDonald -- but I will certainly take some after I've finished Heidi!

I suggest you go ahead and set up the post with ID3 tag information, etc., so you don't slow down any enthusiastic readers :)

I LOVE those kinds of Victorian stories.

Haven't decided what chapter I want yet.

I will sign up for something ... as soon as I figure out what I'd like to do.

George MacDonald influenced a number of well-know 19th and 20th Century
writers, including W.H. Auden, Madeleine L'Engle, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien,
and Mark Twain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_MacDonald

Fox in the Stars is doing MacDonald's The Light Princess as a solo project.

Peter Eastman recorded the short story The Golden Key
http://librivox.org/short-story-collection-001/

And I recorded his short story The Gray Wolf.

The wonderful, but now defunct Family Radio Theatre did an excellent
radio dramatization of At the Back of the North Wind.
http://www.radiotheatre.org/products/northwind/

And, since the movie is in theaters, although not a public domain work,
Family Radio Theatre also did a 22+ hour dramatization of the complete
Chronicles of Narnia (David Suchet does a great job as Aslan).

If this topic is of interest, we should probably move it to the knitting forum.

Any particular two chapters? If not, I'll just sign you up for the next two (8 & 9, I think...)
Enjoy!
