All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/ten-days-in-a-madhouse-by-nellie-bly/

I would like to record Ten Days in a Madhouse by Nellie Bly. It was originally written for the newspaper The World. It was written in 1887, and chronicles the adventures of the author (whose real name was Elizabeth Jane Cochran) after she had herself committed to a notorious New York insane asylum to see what life was like as a ward there.

My ID3 scheme:

Title: Ten Days in a Madhouse - Chapter ##
Artist: Nellie Bly
Album: Ten Days in a Madhouse

Schedule: I guess I'll give myself two months? So, say, early April?

Edited to add:

It doesn't seem to be on Gutenberg, but the full text is here:
http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/bly/madhouse/madhouse.html
and not only is the entire part online, and it was published more than 100 years ago, which indicate it being PD, but the site it is hosted on appears to be a PD site.

I'll be your MC for this project :) Looks like the text is a go, especially since she died before 1923.

If you have server space you can keep your files there, or send them to me through Yousendit. My e-mail is sinister AT greenkri.com.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask :)

I have noticed that the chapters vary wildly in regards to length - some chapters are about five mintues long, other chapters about twenty. I feel somewhat silly recording a chapter that is only 5 minutes, but on the other hand, I think it would be somewhat confusing if I lumped some chapters together, but not others.

At the moment, I've just every chapter as it's own file, does this sound right, or should I lump some of the shorter chapters in with others?

It shouldn't be too confusing to have multiple chapters in one file, just make sure that the Title ID3 tag says the series of chapters that are in that one file. It's up to you how/if you want to lump them together, although it will probably be easier on those downloading the files individually if you lumped the really small chapters together. I usually use 10-15 minutes as a minimum guide when I have multiple small chapters.

I've already recorded most of them ... the nice short chapters were good for a quickie. I assumed that I'd be able to copy and paste them together in Audacity if I chose to do so later, but now that I'm actually attempting to do so, it's not working. Whatever I copy from the first file is erased from memory when I try to paste it to the second file. Am I missing something?

Make sure that you have both files open when you paste it. I don't know why but Audacity only keeps the copied bits while that file is open.

Summary:

In 1887 Nellie Bly, one of the first female newspaper writers, and a young reporter who would soon go on to make a career for herself as an investigative journalist and "stunt" reporter, had herself committed to the Blackwell's Island Insane Asylum in New York. Her purpose was to discover what life was like for those who had been deemed insane. She was surprised to discover the depth of mistreatement of the patients. Partially as a result of her reporting, more money was allocated to the asylum and reforms were put into place.

Excellent Alys. Will these need to go through proof listening? If you've already listened through them once after editing, then it probably won't be necessary.

Well, I didn't technically listen to them (I've discovered that I don't actually hear the mistakes anymore. Having read through the passages, then read them aloud, listening to them yet again makes me sort of space out, and I notice nothing.) But I make a habit of clicking my tongue when I make a mistake, and the clicks are really obvious on the visual output of Audacity. So, while I didn't proof listen I did proof "scan for mistake-clicks and edit accordingly."

That's exactly what I do Alys. We'll send this to the proof listening forum because I know sometimes edits get missed, or one forgets to click.

OK, since I needed something to listen to while sewing today, I started proof listening to this book. It's really an interesting story :) Here's what I've done so far, I'll probably read the rest today...

A repeat at chapter 3 around 12:25 minutes.
A click and a repeat in chapter 3 and 4 around 17:11 minutes
A click and a repeat in chapter 6 and 7 around 9:53 minutes.

I've corrected them. I'll wait to send them to you until the others get proof-listened as well.
