Last Days of Pompeii by Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton
.

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/last-days-of-pompeii-by-edward-bulwer-lytton/

RuthieG is the new BC/MC of this project.
The Last Days of Pompeii is a novel written by the baron Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1834. Once a very widely read book and now relatively neglected, it culminates in the cataclysmic destruction of the city of Pompeii by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The novel uses its characters to contrast the decadent culture of first-century Rome with both older cultures and coming trends. The protagonist, Glaucus, represents the Greeks who have been subordinated by Rome, and his nemesis Arbaces the still older culture of Egypt. Olinthus is the chief representative of the nascent Christian religion, which is presented favorably but not uncritically.

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: 31 May 2010 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1565
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standart

  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:

    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Book [number] Chapter [number] of Last Days of Pompeii. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
" Last Days of Pompeii by Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton. Book [number] Chapter [number]"

    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
End of Book [number] Chapter [number]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Last Days of Pompeii by Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton."

Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    lastdayspompeii_##_lytton.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. lastdayspompeii_01_lytton.mp3)
    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
    Title: ## - Book #, Chapter #
    01 - Book 1, Chapter 1
    Artist:Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton
    Album: Last Days of Pompeii
Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: rg - RuthieG
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me.

I would like to read Book the First, which is sections 1-8.

It will be my first recording for Librivox, but not my first recording experience.

I'll take sections 9 - 11 (Book 2, Chapters 1 - 3). It's my first time recording but I'm a pretty good read aloud reader (as long as I don't have to make entertaining gestures at kids).

Lucrezia31 (aka Renata)

P.S. If I don't totally wreck the first three chapters, I'll do the other ones in Book 2 as well.

I'd like to do a sample recording just to make sure everything is OK before I continue. Should I do chapter 1 and upload it as outlined above or is there another process I should go through to have the sound and quality and like feedback given to me before I continue with the rest?

Just pick a short piece of text, from chapter 1 if you like, and record some 2-3 minutes of it, then upload and post the link here. I will listen to it, check the technical points and post my results. A short piece is sufficient for checking, so no need to do the whole chapter. Would be a pity if the whole chapter turns out to need re-recording.
Also, if you would like to get feedback from more people than only me, you can post your sample in Listeners Wanted, asking for CC (which stands for Constructive Criticism) and people will surely come along with their comments and suggestions.

Could I please have sections 18, 19, 20, and 21? This will be my first time recording. I love to read to my children and this sounds like fun!

Since this is my first time reading (for librivox and as part of a collaborative effort), what's the rule on pronunciation? Is there a common pronunciation guide? - EEdes or -AIdes etc?
