Orjien vapauttaminen Pohjois-Amerikassa by Alexandra Gripenberg.

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

http://librivox.org/orjien-vapauttaminen-pohjois-amerikassa-by-alexandra-gripenberg/

harjoittaessaan historian opintoja. Jos se, niin puutteellinen kuin se
onkin, voisi jossakin määrin herättää myötätuntoisuutta niinhyvin yhtä
maailmanhistorian merkillisimpää tapahtumaa kuin niitä aatteita kohtaan,
jotka siitä saivat eloa, olisi tarkoitus täytetty.
(Summary byAlexandra Gripenberg)
  • Target completion date: 17.1.2009
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/16621
  • Type of proof-listening required: See the FAQ in the Listeners/Editors Wanted forum for information, and copy from there the description of the type of proof-listening needed for this project.

    IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project will be opened up to a group project as soon as a Book Coordinator can be found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to have it re-instated).

Dear Andy,
Welcome to Librivox! Great to see another Finnish reader here, I know no word of the language myself :)
And also great to see your enthusiasm for starting a whole project as a solo. However, reading a whole book, as many of us have discovered, is often more time-consuming than one thinks. We therefore strongly encourage you to read a chapter for one of our collaborative projects before you start a solo project -- you'll get feedback from experienced volunteers and an idea of the work and time involved in recording an entire book. You'll also get used to the LibriVox system of naming files etc, and you can sort out glitches with your recording equipment, if necessary. After you've done a test file and a short recording, you'll be all set to start up a solo.

If you've never done a LibriVox recording before, please also read through this Newbie Guide to Recording, in the LibriVox wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/NewbieGuideToRecording
This includes very valuable advice on how to make a test recording, and where to post it to get feedback on your technical settings etc.

There are plenty of places where you can go to contribute a short recording in Finnish, if you want to avoid recording in English.
Just some examples of places where a contribution from you would be very welcome (see for information on how to contribute the first post of each of these links):
- Multilingual Fairy Tale collection: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16479 - a collection of fairy tales in different languages
- Multilingual Poetry Collection: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16042 - poems in every languages (except English :))
- Multilingual Short Story Collection: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16787 - by this time the name explains itself I think...

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi!

Thanks for your concern, but I actually already did all the reading/recording :D

Now I'm ready to upload if you are... I'm not really sure what happens next (I think I'm waiting for a MC?)..

Andy,

I'll MC this for you but I may not have time to get the magic window set up for you until tomorrow evening. Meanwhile you can upload your files to my MC folder: jo - knotyouraveragejo. Please post the links that you get from the uploader in the thread.

Thanks,
Jo

Andy,

Sorry that's is taken so long to get back to you. I've downloaded your two files and before we can go any further, there are a few technical problems that need to be addressed.

1. Your files are 64kbps mp3 files, sample rate 24000 in stereo. In order to upload your files to archive.org they need to be 128 kbps mp3 files, sample rate 44,100 preferably mono. (BTW I also noticed that there is an imbalance between volume in the right and left channels in these files.) - I can convert these, but if you have your original files, it would probably better if you go back to those and re-export the mp3 files at the above settings.

2. You need to fill in the Title, Artist and Album ID3 tags as indicated in the first post

3. Both files need both the intro including the LV disclaimer and an end of recording note, in addition to the end of book note at the end of the second file. Please read the intro and outro exactly as outlined in the first post. This can be in English as you have done with the first file or Finnish as you prefer. One of our other Finnish readers has already translated the disclaimer in this thread: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10801. While I admittedly don't speak the language at all, here is how I think it might go for this book:
Start of recording (Intro) - First Part

* "Ensimmäinen osa, Orjien vapauttaminen Pohjois-Amerikassa. – Tämä on LibriVox äänite. Kaikki LibriVox äänitteet ovat julkista omaisuutta. Lisätietoja saadaksesi, tai ilmoittautuaksesi vapaaehtoiseksi, mene osoitteeseen: librivox PISTE org"
* If you wish, say:
" Lukijana [your name]"
* Say:
"Orjien vapauttaminen Pohjois-Amerikassa, kirjoittanut Alexandra Gripenberg. Ensimmäinen osa"

End of recording

* At the end of the section, say:

"Ensimmäinen osan loppu"

* If you wish, say:

"Lukijana [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

Start of recording (Intro) Second Part:

"Toinen osa, Orjien vapauttaminen Pohjois-Amerikassa. – Tämä on LibriVox äänite. Kaikki LibriVox äänitteet ovat julkista omaisuutta. Lisätietoja saadaksesi, tai ilmoittautuaksesi vapaaehtoiseksi, mene osoitteeseen: librivox PISTE org"

* If you wish, say:

"Lukijana [your name]"

* Say:

"Orjien vapauttaminen Pohjois-Amerikassa, kirjoittanut Alexandra Gripenberg. Toinen osa"

* At the end of the part 2, say:

"Toisen osan loppu"
* If you wish, say:
" [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

* At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"Teoksen loppu. Orjien vapauttaminen Pohjois-Amerikassa, kirjoittanut Alexandra Gripenberg."
My apologies if I've gotten any of the Finnish language incorrect. Edited to add: Note, the above has been updated based on input from a native Finnish speaker. :)

Once you sort out the above, the next step will be to post in Listeners Wanted for a prooflistener. Also at some point I will need your help selecting an appropriate genre for the catalog.

Sorry about the long post. Let me know if you have any questions about any of this.
Thanks,
Jo

These ones are ready for the catalogue:

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/jo/orjienvapauttaminen_1_gripenberg.mp3
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/jo/orjienvapauttaminen_2_gripenberg.mp3

What a wonderful feeling it is to complete something that has been in the lagging behind drawer for some time already... I did some weird stuff with the uploader, but the latest files should be ok.

Kiitos Antti, nämä on nyt kunnossa.

There seems to be a problem with the link to your webpage, Antti. Please repost the link so I can fix it on the catalog page.
