Select Sermons of Jonathan Edwards.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/select-sermons-of-jonathon-edwards-by-jonathon-edwards/
Jonathan Edwards was a colonial American Congregational preacher, theologian, and missionary to Native Americans. Edwards "is widely acknowledged to be America's most important and original philosophical theologian." His work is very broad in scope, but he is often associated with his defense of Calvinist theology, the metaphysics of theological determinism, and the Puritan heritage. His famous sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," emphasized the just wrath of God against sin and contrasted it with the provision of God for salvation; the intensity of his preaching sometimes resulted in members of the audience fainting, swooning, and other more obtrusive reactions. The swooning and other behaviors in his audience caught him up in a controversy over "bodily effects" of the Holy Spirit's presence. (Summary by Wikipedia)

This collection contains nineteen of his sermons, including "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 6. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 7. to 9. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. Special Instructions
For the sake of continuity in each sermon, please claim ALL sections of each sermon. There are a few that are only one section, some with two sections, and some with three. This will be a requirement for this project.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: 31 December 2009 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. Please note that if we haven't heard from you for two months, your section(s) will automatically be re-opened for other readers. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  5. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.ccel.org/ccel/edwards/sermons.toc.html
  6. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: Modified Word Perfect Proof Listening- Proof-listening against the text
-- While listening, follow the online text and note any differences that change the meaning (with the time).
-- Do the intro and disclaimer match the instructions in the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there any long silences or pauses that ought to be edited out? If so, note the time.
-- Are there any stumbles or repeats that ought to be edited out? If so, note the words and the time.
-- Is there excessive background noise, a constant hiss or buzz that detracts from the reading?
-- Did you need to turn your volume up unusually high to listen to the recording? (Or did you find the recording too loud?)
-- Are the correct closing words used at the end of the recording, as per the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there 5 seconds of silence (10 if the recording is more than 30 minutes long) at the end of the file?

  7. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:

    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  8. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Section [number], of Select sermons of Jonathan Edwards. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"Select sermons of Jonathan Edwards. Section [number], [sermon title, part #]"
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of Section [number]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Select sermons of Jonathan Edwards."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  9. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    selectsermons_##_edwards.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. selectsermons_01_edwards.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: ## - [Section title as written in magic window]
    Artist: Jonathan Edwards
Album: Select Sermons of Jonathan Edwards

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: rd - russiandoll
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. :)

Welcome, Alan! I'll put you in for those sections!

If this is your first recording, please let me know what name you want in the catalog. (Some people put in their full name; some have a nickname or their forum name. HERE is a sample.) If you have a web site, you may include that, too.

Be sure to read the information for new readers; the links are in the opening post.

You may want to record a short portion of this work (or another one - about 30 seconds to a couple minutes) so that all the technical wrinkles can get ironed out before jumping into a longer recording. Tech specs are easier to fix before recording than after!

Holler if you have questions.

Thanks Tricia for your prompt response.

Sorry for my tardy reply -- I've been away from my laptop for the past several days...

I'm awaiting the arrival of our chattels to NZ from Australia. Moving company says not until 16 Feb now. My headset and mainframe is in with the stuff. So I'll be able to get to recording in the evenings after this (as I have three rambuncious boys!)

I'm very well versed in Audacity and AVS Audio Editor so no worries for recordings in mp3 or .wav files. I'm not versed in uploading files to LibriVox yet, though...

Cheers,

Alan

Thanks, harsh!

A couple things:

1) The file name on the section you just posted is incorrect. With the spaces in it, the file name doesn't come through correctly. Could you rename and reload it? It should be selectsermons_10_edwards.mp3

2) The special rules of this project is to claim the different parts of the sermon together, so that the same voice is reading the entire sermon. Since you recorded section 10, you would also need to claim section 11. And if you claim section 23, you'll also need to claim section 22. Would you like to claim those sections as well?

You bet, Steve! They're yours.

Since this appears to be your first recording, you may want to do a smaller portion of it (a minute or two) and post that first, so that all the technicals can be worked out. It's easier to fix them before recording a whole section!

Holler if you have questions... and then post, because I probably won't hear you holler.
