20000 Leagues Under the Seas by Jules Verne

Captain Nemo, The Nautilus, and the mysterious depths of the ocean. Unforgettable. Come join an adventure that will roam among coral and pearls, sharks and giant squid, with wonders of biology and engineering that will thrust us from the Antarctic to Atlantis. Whether voyaging a yarn of the glorious unknown, a tale of the darkness that grips the heart of men, or a reinterpretation of Homer's Odyssey, we'll all enjoy the fantastic trip. Seasickness optional.

How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 4. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are up for grabs. Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section youd like to read (include the blue number, please). Read points 5. to 7. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

Is there a deadline?
Yes. February 28, 2007

However, try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool, to be rescued in loving adoption.

If we pass the deadline, claimed but uncompleted chapters may be liberated, if there are readers available.

Where do I find the text?

What a great project! Sign me up!

Chapter 02. The Pros and Cons
Chapter 03. As Master Wishes

I notice that the chapters are fairly short - looks like 15-20 minutes each

They're yours Chip. Enjoy!

Yes, this book is around the same length as Hardy's Return of the Native, with about the same chapter size, a three thousand word average. Four seems typical for most of the other projects.

Should be using the ol' short and sweet as a selling point? ;)

Hello Marlo,

I will meta-coordinate you. I'm looking forward to hear this book. I never read it, but when I was a child, the title startled me. Especially in the German translation the title can also have the meaning "in a depth of 20.000 league" which is a little bit unreasonable

Aha! I'm a big fan.

I'll sign up for chapters 10 to 12 of the second part, please.

Hey Rainer!

Thank you. Actually, the title is confusing in any language. Being the sea, and leagues, we expect it to mean a story that takes place way way far under the sea. Verne, however, meant it as mileage, as in a long long roadtrip around the world, just taken under the ocean.

Technically, a league is just an archaic measure of distance equal to 4.8km; it doesn't even have anything to do with water. So what the title really means is 'Travelling 96,000 km, as it happens, through the ocean', but that's not as poetic somehow ;)

Your claim to 4,5, and 6 has been staked, Chip.

I'm still downloading your finished chapters, but I've marked them as done on trust. :P

Believe me, you could hate it a lot worse. I wouldn't even attempt to download most of these chapters from home. The dialup connection won't remain stable long enough. I've noticed it has a tendency to die right around 98% complete...

Thanks! I'll have 4, 5, and 6 done this weekend and uploaded from work on Monday.

This is part of why I use Free Download Manager. It allows me to resume when things go bellyup. Or, if I want to pause a download to check for email, or look at this forum, or what have you. :) The other thing is: you can queue downloads.

You're such a well-oiled machine at this, Chip. If someone said you could do the entire body of Shakespeare in three days, I would not bet against it :P

I should probably do that too, but I'm fortunate in that I go to work five nights a week to a place where I have access to twin OC-3 lines. An OC-3 is the the equivilent of one hundred T-1s and a T-1 flashes data at a rate of 1.544 megabits per second. If I can tune the system right, I can transfer every bit of a 100 gigabite hard drive in about three seconds. As a result, I just chat on the forums with the modem and save the data transfers for work.

There are only 72 hours in three days; I probably couldn't even get through all of the history plays... ;)

Seriously though, I simply love doing this. 4, 5, and 6 are already done as I type this and earlier this evening I completed part 8 of History of England. It's not really all that hard once you grow used to it, though I have to admit that it's the sort of thing you really have to be in the mood to do. Fortunately I enjoy it so much that I'm pretty much always in the mood! :D

I would like to record Part 1 chapter 8,9, and 10.

I just noticed that I joined librivox at almost the same time as ChipDoc, but he has been WAAAY more prolific. Way to go!

Also-- my french pronunciation is awful. I'm concerned about getting the names right. I'll listen to ChipDocs recordings and pronounce the names as he does. Failing that, could someone record a brief pronunciation guide for the names in 20000 Leagues?

Thanks,
Sean
