This Weekly Poem is complete. Please watch this forum for next week's selection!

Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many Librivox volunteers as possible!

This week's selection is an Irish poem for St. Patrick's Day, The Song of Wandering Aengus by William Butler Yeats. This is Yeats in his faerie folklore vein, and he paints an evocative picture of a beautiful brush with the supernatural. It's so easy to imagine this poem as a Pre-Raphaelite painting!

The Wikipedia page on the author: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Butler_Yeats

The text of the poem is available at Bartleby ( http://www.bartleby.com/146/9.html ), or below:
The Song of Wandering Aengus
by William Butler Yeats

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.
At the beginning, read the abbreviated "librivox disclaimer":

Lovely poem! Here's mine:

Embarassing to admit, I've never read Yeats. I must strive to rectify this (he said, as he peered anxiously at the tottering mountain of "things to read soon...") :)

Annie, Ted, got it. Thanks! :D

I'm still trying to kick the leavings of my cold before I do mine... :?

I sent a copy of the poem that I read, via yousendit. I haven't posted an intro yet, but I will now! I hope I got everything right; I would appreciate any feedback on audio quality. I recorded it in CastBlaster with a lavalier mic (but I have other mics if necessary) and edited the ID3 tags in Audacity before sending it.

Caroline's is all good, and...

Despite some residual croakiness (which plays right into the last stanza though, doesn't it?) I felt like recording tonight, and here's my version. Technically I just need to send it to myself, but thought I'd put it up here so you all can double-check me, and also because I'm actually quite happy with it:

Fox in the Stars:

Would you let me know if you detected any buzzing or humming in my recording. It was reported to me on another piece and so I'm trying to figure out what happened.

Thanks,

Robert

This is a first try at contributing to this lovely collection. I am feeling very inadequate after listening to several wonderful renditions of "Aengus", but recording it was pure joy.

Wesley, Gail, Lisa, got yours! Thank you! ^_^

Gail - I just love the way you performed the poem, but a few times it sounded like you were getting some air on the mic on the "plosive" b and p sounds. It's not that bad; I don't want you to re-record it or anything, but you might try fiddling with your mic positioning, like try more to the side or a little higher, away from the path of your breath.

Gail and Lisa - your files didn't seem to have all the ID3 tags set. Don't worry, it was no trouble to fix on my end, but I thought I'd post the link to the wiki in case it can be of help:
http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/HowToAddOrEditID3Tags

Robert - yes, there was occasional buzzing. I listened in WinAmp with the little visualisation bars, and it tended to happen on sounds where the whole spectrum jumped up.

Here is my version. I just love Yeats! Someday I'd like to tackle "Host of the Air" but I don't think I'm quite ready.

There is one pop in mine, but I really liked the rest so didn't want to change it all.
