A comprehensive and detailed account of medieval life and culture in France, with reference to other parts of Europe, including chapters on private life, food, hunting, games and pastimes, costume, privileges and rights, justice, commerce, finance, and punishments. The online text of the book has over 400 illustrations.
Warning: Sections 27 and 28, Punishments, may be disturbing to those of a sensitive disposition. (Summary by Ruth Golding)
How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: 10/25/09 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. Please note that if we haven't heard from you for two months, your section(s) will automatically be re-opened for other readers. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/10940 NOTE: All references to figures in the text should be omitted.
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: [BC please fill in]
DURING recording: Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording: Start of recording (Intro)
"Section [number] of Manners, Customs and Dress. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name]"
Say: "Manners, Customs and Dress During the Middle Ages and During the Renaissance Period, by Paul Lacroix. Section [xx]"
End of recording
At the end of the section, say:
“End of Section [xx]"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of Manners, Customs and Dress During the Middle Ages and During the Renaissance Period, by Paul Lacroix."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
AFTER recording: Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
Save files as

ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
Author: Paul Lacroix
Title: ## - Chapter Title (as in Magic Window e.g. 01 - Condition of Persons and Lands, Part 1)
Album: Manners, Custom and Dress During the Middle Ages and During the Renaissance Period
Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread): http://upload.librivox.org
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin) You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: rg - RuthieG
I'd like to read at least one, maybe two sections from this text, which I've downloaded. Have any been claimed at this point yet? If so, which ones? Or are they all still up for grabs?
Welcome, smoochykicia! This project is On Hold, so how about hold that thought until this is activated. In the meantime, have a look around and see what else interests you! There are lots of open projects available.
I've moved this back to the Launch Pad for you now that your other BC projects are complete. I don't have time to MC for you at this point, but another MC will be along to set it up for you.
I have set this up in the database, Alex. I have changed the text URL to the main Gutenberg page for the book, as some people use the HTML and some plain text.
The book is 150,000+ words, divided into 16 sections plus a preface. I have therefore given you 33 sections, as some of the sections will need to be split into two or even three, depending on their length. When you add the section info to the Magic Window, it will be a good idea to include word counts for each section.
I notice also that there are many illustrations, and it would be a good idea to note in the first post that readers should omit the references to Figures.
Hello! New here and thought this would be a fun project to start on .
I would be interested in reading sections 4-6 (the three parts on Food and Cookery)
Timothy and Nicole: I am sorry the sections haven't yet been divided. I am in contact with the Book Co-ordinator and hope that he will be getting this done within the next few days. If not, the project will go back on hold until he has time to do it.
The BC has been in touch to let me know that he won't be able to co-ordinate this for the moment. So, I will be putting this project on hold until he has more free time.
