Stand by for Mars! by Carey Rockwell (pseud.).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/stand-by-for-mars-by-carey-rockwell-2/

(BC admin)

Tom Corbett - Space Cadet was one of the first multimedia sensations. In the 1950s the character had his own radio show, TV series, comic book, breakfast cereal, and a line of young-adult novels. A cross between "Tom Brown's School Days" and Horatio Hornblower (and loosely based upon Robert A. Heinlein's novel "Space Cadet"), the books follow the adventures of Tom and his friends Roger Manning and Astro as they work their way through Space Academy to become officers of the Solar Guard. Along the way they tangle with space pirates, smugglers, and the threat of demerits for breaking the rules.

In this volume, we learn how the Polaris Unit first came together -- and how they almost washed out before they got off the ground -- and how their first mission mission went from a training maneuver, to a rescue, to a struggle to survive in the Martian deserts.

The authorship of the novels remains unknown -- the credited name, "Carey Rockwell" was a pseudonym created by the publisher -- although the most likely candidates are Joseph Greene (who created the character) and Richard Jessup (who wrote for the TV and radio shows).

-- Are there any stumbles or repeats that ought to be edited out? If so, note the words and the time.
-- Is there excessive background noise, a constant hiss or buzz that detracts from the reading?
-- Did you need to turn your volume up unusually high to listen to the recording? (Or did you find the recording too loud?)
-- Are the correct closing words used at the end of the recording, as per the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there 5 seconds of silence (10 if the recording is more than 30 minutes long) at the end of the file?

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project will be opened up to a group project as soon as a Book Coordinator can be found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to have it re-instated).

Okay, seanohara, you're all set.

It doesn't appear you've been involved with a project where you've had to use the Magic Window before, so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I'm be PMing your user ID and password shortly.

We’ll keep this here on the "Launchpad" for a day or two to see if we can scare up a prooflistener before moving on to the "Solo" forum.

If you have any questions or problems at any point during this project don't hesitate to post them here or send me a PM.

Have fun!

I enjoyed Heinlein's Space Cadet when I was in high school, and since this was (to some extent) influenced by that work, I'm going to be interested in listening to it when it's finished. Hope the rest of the Tom Corbett books get recorded, too.

Greetings -

I sat back and waited to see if anyone else would jump on this one and they didn't and, as I am about to finish up a couple of other PL projects, I'll be more than happy to work on this one.

I am a fan of old time radio and have listened to episodes of the Tom Corbett series, so this should be fun.

Okay, Chapter 1 is ready.

You would not believe how hard it is to do an angry drill-instructor voice without getting clipping. I don't think any got through to the final edit, but keep an ear out, Lomond. Also let me know if the loud-speaker and oath-taking effects I tried sound okay.
