A heads up to all book coordinators: I?ve updated the guidelines for how to be a book coordinator: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=425

Probably the only new information you will need is this:

Collect the following information for every file: reader's name, reader's webpage url (if applicable), runtime in hour/minute/second format --- 00:32:14. Save this information in a text document (Notepad, MS Word, etc.) to be emailed to us later. You can have the readers get this information to you by posting it in the thread, sending a private message, or sending an email, whatever works.

This shouldn?t take much extra time and will make the cataloging process much smoother and quicker. Thanks!

Quick question: there a several instances where part of a word is dashed out, most notably ----shire. Presumably Austen didn't want to includ real names or something. I've been pronouncing those just "shire." Now I've come to a spot in Ch. 30 that's written Lord -----. I think it's meant to be Lord Fitzwilliam but I'm not sure. How are all of you handling the evasive dashes?? Advice would be most welcome!

Personally, I've just been skipping them, with a beat of silence to indicate that there is something missing. Anyone else?

Personally, I would insert "Blank" for the dashed out words. E.g. "He went to visit Lord 'blank' in 'blank' shire". And put a certain emphasis on "BLANK" to indicate that it is used instead of a proper name.

If it is a year (e.g. 17--), I would say "Seventeen Hundred and something" (which sounds kind of dumb, now I think on't!).

I finally got the chapters recorded; now I need to edit. I have looked at the editing tips forum, but I can't find anything that tells me how to get started. Can someone direct me to the directions? This is the first time I've done anything like this, and I need "editing for dummies"!

Elisabeth,

I use my recording software to listen back through my entire recording. It shows me the waveforms, and it's really easy to select and delete coughing, loud swallowing, etc, or copy and paste in a little more "space" where necessary (don't insert true silence --it sounds funny). When I make a mistake while reading, I pause, say "again" then go back a sentence or two and read that passage again. Then, when I listen back, it's easy to delete the bad bit.

Listen through headphones!

I hope that will help get you started. If you let us know what recording software you used, we may be able to give you more specific help :)

Elisabeth - true, there isn't much in the Editing forum on how to get started. Why not post the question there as well - you'll have a wider 'audience' and are sure to get some feedback - and the next person with your question (and there will be one!) will find the answers there! :)

The initials are to differentiate my solo P & P when it is finished so can you just edit them out when you are validating Chris? That would save me having to copy the file, rename it, and load the extra copy to my server.
