Histories Vol. 2 by Herodotus of Halicarnassus Translated by A. D. Godley. g

This book was cataloged on June 12, 2009. The audio files have been transferred to Internet Archive and may be found at: http://librivox.org/herodotus-histories-vol-2/

The Histories of Herodotus of Halicarnassus is considered the first work of history in Western literature. Written about 440 BC, the Histories tell the story of the war between the Persian Empire and the Greek city-states in the 5th century BC. Herodotus traveled extensively around the ancient world, conducting interviews and collecting stories for his book. The rise of the Persian Empire is chronicled, and the causes for the conflict with Greece. Herodotus treats the conflict as an ideological one, frequently contrasting the absolute power of the Persian king with the democratic government of the Greeks. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia.)

  1. How to claim a part:
To find a section to record, look at the sections in the box below. All those without names beside them are available. Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6 to 8 below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: December 1, 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and I will delete your claim. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

I will note the date you volunteer for a chapter, and if you haven't recorded or posted about the progress of your chapter(s) for a month at any time, I may put them back to the pool. This doesn't mean you have to record within a month of making a claim, just be sure to keep in touch to let me know how things are going. As reading progresses, after due warning, we may reassign your sections if your claim languishes!
  4. Where do I find the text?
    Source text: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0126
Please read only from the individual text file for your section.
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalog. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: 02 - Vol 2, pt 2 (for section 02, etc.)

Hi Carolina, welcome to LibriVox, and welcome to Herodotus Histories Vol 2! You have Sec 1! Unless you have previous recording experience, you might like to submit a 3 or 4 minute sample of the beginning of your section to make sure the technical issues are all ironed out. :)

Just post it to this thread, and I'll have a listen. When you reply, please tell me the name you wish to use for catalog credit and your URL, if any.

Is the translator "A.D. Godley" or "E.D. Godley"?

The intro's in the text files show "E.D", but the main link shows "A.D".

Hello, this is my first recording. Could I claim section 3? I'll try to get it done ASAP, so you folks can check quality and such. Please use my name: "Matthew Katsenes" or username "mkatsenes" as appropriate.

I've listened to many books and am excited to help record a few.

Hi Matthew, welcome to LibriVox, and welcome to Herodotus Histories Vol 2! Section 3 is yours! Unless you have previous recording experience, you might like to submit a 3 or 4 minute sample of the beginning of your section, before you record the rest, to make sure the technical issues are all ironed out. :)

Just post it to this thread, and Karen or I will have a listen.

Here's my first few minutes. Let me know if the quality is up to snuff. I tried a couple different mic's I had in the closet. Turns out that the best I could do (without some kind of amp) is the internal mic in my macbook. That plus a couple audacity filters gets most of the hiss out of the background.
