The Two Treatises of Civil Government is a work of political philosophy published anonymously in 1689 by John Locke. The First Treatise is an extended attack on Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha, which argued for a divinely-ordained, hereditary, absolute monarchy. The more influential Second Treatise outlines a theory of civil society based on natural rights and contract theory. Locke begins by describing the "state of nature," and goes on to explain the hypothetical rise of property and civilization, asserting that the only legitimate governments are those which have the consent of the people.
Locke's ideas heavily influenced both the American and French Revolutions. His notions of people's rights and the role of civil government provided strong support for the intellectual movements of both revolutions. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia)
How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: December 15, 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
Proof Listening: we have no dedicated proof-listener, but wonderful ad-hoc volunteers . Please proof-listen against the text if you can: see this post.
-- While listening, follow the online text and note any differences that affect the meaning (with the time).
-- Do the intro and disclaimer match the instructions in the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there any long silences or pauses that ought to be edited out? If so, note the time.
-- Are there any stumbles or repeats that ought to be edited out? If so, note the words and the time.
-- Is there excessive background noise, a constant hiss or buzz that detracts from the reading?
-- Did you need to turn your volume up unusually high to listen to the recording? (Or did you find the recording too loud?)
-- Are the correct closing words used at the end of the recording, as per the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there 5 seconds of silence (10 if the recording is more than 30 minutes long) at the end of the file?
DURING recording: Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording: Start of recording (Intro)
"Book [number], Chapter [number] of Two Treatises of Civil Government. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name]"
Say: "Two Treatises of Civil Government, by John Locke. Book [number], Chapter [number]"
End of recording
At the end of the section, say:
“End of [Chapter]"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of Two Treatises of Civil Government, by John Locke. Edited by Thomas Hollis."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
AFTER recording: Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread): http://upload.librivox.org

I remember how, in college, I got that part-time job as a circus clown, and how the children would laugh and laugh at me. I vowed, then and there, that I would get revenge.

I think I'm going to rerecord these chapters though. My old USB mic setup produced so many annoying mouth noises! It's like I'm reading next to an suicidal goldfish.
Anyway, I guess I'd still like to claim 12 through 16, unless you would like to take some of those chapters for yourself!
Thanks for getting this going! It'll be an important addition to our catalogue.

Thanks, D.E.! I don't know what a suicidal goldfish sounds like, but I know what you mean (I practically disown all the recordings I made on my old mic). Anyway, I'll mark section 12 as completed and sign you up for the other four. Just let me know if you re-record.
I'm glad to get this one going, too.. it's such a foundational text, one that deserves to be read (or heard) more often. And I included the first Treatise, even though it's not as important, for the same reason I'm BCing Books 3 & 4 of Leviathan: I've never actually read it. Plus I bet it's never been done in audio form.

I've included the brief pre-preface editor's note on the edition and description of the scope of the two treatises. Just holler if you'd like them snipped out and it to start at 'preface' proper.

Thanks, rd! And no, I'm glad that you included the pre-preface preface.

Would you mind if I did the whole of the rest of book 1 (04-11), Leon, as it doesn't seem to be being snapped up like book 2? I'd quite like to see it through.

(Edit - Heh. That should read '18:48', close brackets.)
