What Prohibition Has Done to America, by Fabian Franklin.

THIS PROJECT IS NOW COMPLETE. ALL FILES CAN BE FOUND ON THE CATALOG PAGE:

http://librivox.org/what-prohibition-has-done-to-america/

In What Prohibition Has Done to America, Fabian Franklin presents a concise but forceful argument against the Eighteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Beginning in 1920, this Amendment prohibited the sale and manufacture of alcoholic beverages in the United States, until it was repealed in 1933. Franklin contends that the Amendment "is not only a crime against the Constitution of the United States, and not only a crime against the whole spirit of our Federal system, but a crime against the first principles of rational government." Writing only two years after Prohibition began, he correctly predicts many of its disastrous consequences, such as runaway bootlegging and organized crime. The book is both a passionate defense of liberty, and a reminder to Americans of the perils of surrendering it. (Summary by Leon Mire)
Volunteers outside the USA: Fabian Franklin died in 1939. His work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years.
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: September 30, 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/17417
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

    (BC admin)
  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Chapter [number] of What Prohibition Has Done to America. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"What Prohibition Has Done to America, by Fabian Franklin. Chapter [number]: [chapter title]"
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of Chapter [number]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of What Prohibition Has Done to America, by Fabian Franklin."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    whatprohibitionhasdone_##_franklin.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. whatprohibitionhasdone_01_franklin.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags

ID3 tags do not need to be filled out for this project. They will be filled out automatically using a new software procedure.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: lm - LeonMire
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. :)
I remember how, in college, I got that part-time job as a circus clown, and how the children would laugh and laugh at me. I vowed, then and there, that I would get revenge.

I'm happy to take section 5, if you don't mind an Aussie accent.

I've uploaded Chapter 10 for review. The vitals are:

Size: 11.8MB
Duration: 12:49

(Leon: I read your note about not having to include ID3 v2 tags. I did include the title field in the above file, however, because of the way my recordings are saved on my computer. If I don't tag them, they go into an "unknown" folder. Let me know if this screws things up for you. If so, I'll leave all fields blank and insert tags after I upload the files. Thanks. jk)

Thanks, jude! You're quickly making a good reputation for yourself. :)

About the ID3 tags: The new software procedure just takes the info from the magic window and puts it onto the ID3 tags, when we're cataloging it. (So far, I think I'm the only one who's used it). In short, you tagging them won't hurt anything, because the software will just overwrite them (if they're not correct).

But I hadn't foreseen the sort of thing you mentioned. Hmm.. could you give me some more details? It doesn't do that on my computer. What operating system do you use? Why does it automatically re-locate the files to a pre-specified folder, instead of letting you choose where to save it? Is it a personal folder setting?

I'm just curious to know how widespread a problem this might be.. it won't mess anything up one way or the other.

I use Garageband on a Macbook Pro. In order to convert the native .band file to an .mp3, I send the recording to iTunes.

iTunes creates a folder for the .mp3 file (under the main iTunes folder) based on the author's (artist's) name. Under this folder, it creates another based on the title of the work. It is into this folder that the .mp3 is placed. It's turned out to be an easy and automatic way of filing the recordings I do. iTunes did this unilaterally with no configuration on my part.

For this last effort (Prohibition) when I included no ID3 tags, I discovered that the .mp3 was copied to Unknown Artist and under that, Unknown Album. I simply manually created a folder "Fabian Franklin" and under that, "What Prohibition Has Done to America" and moved the .mp3 there.

The complete path used by iTunes under the way I operate is:

Macintosh HD --> Users --> jk --> Music --> iTunes --> iTunes Music -- > Fabian Franklin --> What Prohibition Has Done to America --> whatprohibitionhasdone_10_franklin.mp3

I suppose each user will have a different methodology based on their software and workflow. Anywho, I can do manually what I need to do; it's one extra step but it's no big thing.
