All recordings can be found on the catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-wind-in-the-willows-by-kenneth-grahame/

O, so MANY books, and so much fun!

Librivox, since you already sucked me in on chapter work and poetry, I figure it's time to do something major. I'm staking my claim to The Wind in the Willows. :D

I'll be using Project Gutenberg's text. I know we have a book copy somewhere around the house, but so far, I haven't located it.

All right - step right up! Who wants to be my meta-coordinator? (Since I don't know how to do that stuff?)

Hi Kaffen, I'm glad to see you feel ready to take on a solo project! Are you aware that The Wind in the Willows is currently underway as a collaborative project? The thread is here: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1054 but I'm afraid it is already full subscribed. Having said that, you are welcome to do your own version as well and I'd be happy to MC for you.

I'm chagrined! I had never even noticed that forum before. I had checked out the Catalog, Going Solo, and Readers Wanted: Books, and was elated that this book wasn't mentioned.

'Twas too good to be true.

Well, I've been having too much fun practicing voices and rereading this classic, so I think I'll do it anyway. Thanks so much for offering your services, Annie, in a redundant effort.

At least I plan to be first out with a reading. I'm going to set myself a goal of March 31 for completion of the reading, but I'm planning to beat that.

Kaffen - Sorry to disappoint you but don't worry! I had already started a solo Pride and Prejudice podcast when I found Librivox and was disappointed that they already had a full subscribed group project underway. However, I was encouraged to continue my version and contribute it. I also was able to fill in for a few "orphaned" chapters of the group project. This may well be the case for you with The Wind in the Willows.

I suggest you post in that thread and offer to pick up any chapters that are orphaned in the future, I don't think we've had a single big project yet that hasn't had at least one orphan so you'll probably get to contribute at least one recording! Also keep an eye on this thread: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=140 for orphans of other books you are interested in.

I'm glad you're going to do your own version, I think it is important for us to read things we enjoy and clearly this work means a lot to you. I'll add you to the list of coming projects on the catalog page. (BTW, Wind in the Willows is listed as a collaborative project in process on the catalog page.)

You have two options, to save all the files until you are finished and then get them to me by posting links or using yousendit, or if you don't have server space or computer memory enough, send each recording to me as you finish it via yousendit. Let me know what works for you.

Kaffen, It's not your fault... our catalog index page is starting to get a bit out of control with all of the seperate lists there...

I'm wondering if we need to start considering a seperate page for the works in progress... though, we're putting off making more changes with the hope of a workable database on the horizon that would allow users to search for a title and if it's in the database as a work in progress this status would be displayed.

As Annie said, there is no reason not to record your version of this book... she did her own version of Pride and Prejudice while we have a collaborative version as well. So, please don't be too discouraged.

EDIT... Seems she snuck in her comments ahead of me ;)

Annie
I've got two chapters finished. While space is not an issue on my machine, I'd like to send at least part of the work on to you so you can check out volumes, etc., on another PC. I never trust something created on my computer until it works OK on another one!

I've used yousendit.com before, so I know the drill. Where should I address it to reach you?

Mark,

Actually, if you could post it in the Listeners Wanted forum, that would be great as I am a bit swamped right now. You can just yousendit to your own email address and then post the resulting link and you should get plenty of feedback in no time! :)

I see! I wondered how everyone was creating those links.

Actually, Yousendit creates the link no matter who you send it to. When you get the confirmation screen, right-click on the link and select "Copy Shortcut" (I think) and then paste it into your forum message. At least that's how I do it... :)

This is just a progress report for anyone who may be interested in this project.

Chapters 1-9 are complete. I expect to finish the readings for this book by March 24. I hadn't realized when I started just how MANY characters I had to create voices for: Rat, Mole, Otter, Badger, Toad, a rabbit, a hedgehog, a chorus of field-mice, three swallows, a magistrate, the court clerk, the gaoler's daughter, the Engine-Driver, the Sea-Faring Rat, the Chief Weasel - did I miss any? And, oh yeah, sing about three songs!

...We now return you to your regularly scheduled entertainment...

 Celebration!

The last chapter is "in the mail" to Annie!

Thanks go to Catharine Eastman, whose public domain composition for "Toad's Last Little Song!" I used (misused?) in Chapter 12.

Well, maybe now I'll let my family see a little more of me. I've been holed up in our library for much of the last month, putting this together. It's been fun, though!

On to The Goops (after a little rest)...

Good work Mark! If it's okay with you, I'll start a thread to get these files proof listened for any technical glitches. Also, if you'd like to write a small description/summary, that would be great; if not we can ask someone else or get one from wikipedia.

Are you expecting a text file (Word?) here? Or an MP3?
How long?

What is the intent - to synopsize for someone browsing titles in the Catalog?

Just a little short text blurb that we can put at the top of the catalog page. See
http://librivox.org/alices-adventures-in-wonderland-by-lewis-carroll
for example, or browse around some of the other pages. Some are a little longer, but they don't have to be.

If you write something, you can just post it here :)
