Hehehe! :D Within the 9 Books, I had to divide the text myself: hence, no titles - this is welcome reassurance that it was worth it to put the first sentences up there . . .

Welcome to Herodotus Vol 1; glad to see you posting!

Hi there. I just recorded and uploaded about half of section 2 as a test. There are a few mistakes I know, but it is just a test so I didn't think it mattered so much. Hope it went OK. You can call me Chif for everything.
Thanks,
Chif :D

Chif, thank you for your test recording! I found it on the server, and pm'ed it to Graham, who will have a listen and probably give you some technical suggestions. But your reading style is very fine!

This is such an enjoyable read that I'm going to be greedy and take sections 3 and 4 as well!

Cool! I'm reading my paper copy - I thought I had read it, but found I had not - and I love it! I've already finished Book 1. I loved the info - reliable or not - on the Kingdom, or empire, of Lydia, and the rise of Persia over the Medes. (Love that smiley!)

Hi Graham - I'm having a problem with section 1. It takes a minute or two to download, as if it's full, and Windows logs it in at 14,768 KB. It uploads in Audacity, Audacity Beta, and Windows media player without an error message. But it seems to be a whole file of silence! Oh, dear . .

Graham - Dallas1942 pm'ed me and sent me a sample, so if he posts here asking for a section, it isn't necessary to ask him for a sample. It's on the server under MC directory "xx".

How very strange! You're quite right: the MP3 file on my hard drive is all silence too. I'm re-exporting the Audacity file and will upload it again in a moment.

Thanks for this, Alan.

I suppose you wouldn't like to bid for a section?

The sound is definitely much better, but this time you've recorded at rather a low level. The input volume needs to be set higher, and I think you need to experiment a little more with the position of your mouth relative to the microphone, as there is still a hint of "plosives".

Good luck with it.

I'm still working on getting my fan fixed for my computer... it's not only loud, it's extremely high pitched, so it comes through in the recording no matter what I do to cover it or reposition my microphone.

Since recording for Librivox is something that I really want to do, this upcoming weekend I am going to attempt to swap it out for a replacement fan or otherwise see what I can do to fix the problem.

Failing this, I will see if I can figure out how to use the noise correction features in Audacity to clean up my recordings a bit.

I will claim section 7 for now. My ambition urges me to claim more sections, but until I get my mic issue fixed, I think I had better start out small.

I have already done test recordings for a good part of the section. I'm confident in my ability to read the text. It's just a matter of fixing the mic issue so it sounds good.

I will keep you regularly updated on any progress towards solving the problem and will relinquish my section within the next week or two if I can't find a solution.

Hopefully that won't be the case, and I'll be able to post some completed recordings and go on to claim more sections soon!

Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions.

Thanks!

I've signed you up for section 7, Eric.

Good luck with the fan.

What name would you like to be catalogued under?

:)
