The Theory of Moral Sentiments by Adam Smith.

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

http://librivox.org/the-theory-of-moral-sentiments-by-adam-smith/

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: July, 2009 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.adamsmith.org/smith/tms/tms-index.htm
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
  6. Proof Listening: we have no dedicated proof-listener, but wonderful ad-hoc volunteers. Please proof-listen against the text if you can, and note the issue with the time in the recording where it occurs:
-- While listening, follow the online text and note any differences that affect the meaning.
-- Do the intro and disclaimer match the instructions in the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there any long silences or pauses that ought to be edited out?
-- Are there any stumbles or repeats that ought to be edited out?
-- Is there excessive background noise, a constant hiss or buzz that detracts from the reading?
-- Did you need to turn your volume up unusually high to listen to the recording? (Or did you find the recording too loud?)
-- Are the correct closing words used at the end of the recording, as per the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there 5 seconds of silence (10 if the recording is more than 30 minutes long) at the end of the file?

    Magic Window:

  7. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  8. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Section [librivox section number] of The Theory of Moral Sentiments. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"The Theory of Moral Sentiments, by Adam Smith. [Part] [Section] [Chapter]"
NOTE: If you have more than one chapter in your section, say the chapter name before each chapter.
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
End of section [librivox section number]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Theory of Moral Sentiments, by Adam Smith."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  9. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    theoryofmoralsentiments_##_smith.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. theoryofmoralsentiments_01_smith.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: ## - [Section title from magic window]
    Artist: Adam Smith
Album: The Theory of Moral Sentiments

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)

Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: lm - LeonMire
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me.

I'd be happy to be the MC for this project. :) And thanks, miss stav, for offering to do the proof-listening.

EDIT: Okay, you're all set up! Your setup looks good. Just let me know if you have any questions.

I'll come back later to sign up for some sections. :D
I remember how, in college, I got that part-time job as a circus clown, and how the children would laugh and laugh at me. I vowed, then and there, that I would get revenge.

If you scroll down, you'll see the magic window itself. Click where it has the "..." under Reader and type in the name. It won't give you that message, even if the reader has already signed up for a section.

I usually don't use the top part, where it says "Add a Reader." I find it much easier just to edit it directly.

While I'm at it, could you sign me up for 23 and 24?

sections 28, 29, and 30 will potentially have the same title, as they are all continuations of section 27. they will all be "Part VII: Section I: Chapter I (continued)." does anyone know about how to handle this?

for continued chapters, instead of using "(continued)" we could call the different sections a, b, c, etc.... e.g. Chapter Ia, Chapter Ib, etc. ?

hm...

Oh, good point. Yes, you would call section 27 Chapter Ia, section 28 Chapter Ib, and so on. You'd want to do the same thing with sections 16 and 17.

excellent question alana. i have changed the "DURING recording" section a bit so it will be a little better. look at #7 above and let me know if you have questions.

basically you'll say the librivox section number at the beginning, and then say what chapter it is before each new section in the recording.
