I recorded the entire Chapter 6 and was all done listening, wrote
the IDv2 tags and was exporting to MP3 in Audacity when my
computer crashed. Its terrible. I seem to have lost about 3 hours
worth of work

I have recovered 756 little files with clips of the recording in no
particular order.

Is there ANY way to get them back into Audacity without having to import raw 756 times? Is it just simpler to re-record all over again?

I am curious to see what other Librivoxers have done for such a problem..

@shoes: Ouch! When you started Audacity again, did it give you an option to try to recover the project? If you are on Windows, there is a nifty little freeware program called MediaJoin from Mystik Media (http://www.mystikmedia.com) that will join audio files and output a single WAV/WMA/OGG/MP3 file. It will let you reorder the files, but you'll need to know what order they go in, because it won't let you play them. It will join video files as well, by the way. I don't know of any other way, short of manually importing each of the files, so it may be both easier and faster to re-record.

My suggestion to all readers using Audacity is to

Save the project immediately upon completion of the raw recording;
Export a WAV, AIFF, or FLAC format file immediately after saving;
Do your editing, saving frequently;
Export another WAV/AIFF/FLAC file every time you've done considerable editing that you don't want to lose;
Save the project when you've finished editing, export a WAV/AIFF/FLAC format file, and THEN export your MP3.

If you follow this procedure, you'll use considerably more disk space while editing, but it's MUCH safer in the event of a crash, either of the entire system, or of just Audacity. When the project is complete, you can certainly delete everything, but I suggest that you keep at least the first and last WAV/AIFF/FLAC exports, just in case there is a problem somewhere along the line from your computer to the final destination at archive.org (we have had problems with files getting truncated in the upload from the LV server to archive in the past).

Tnaks for the file Rae. I've renamed it on the uploader to conform to the file naming scheme for this projtect: buddhistwritings_28_warren.mp3. The forum software and the uploader do not like spaces (you have to replace a single space with "%20" for the links to work), and the uploader considers capitals different from lowercase letters for sorting and such. The file naming scheme is always included in the first post, usually right above or right below the informatin about the ID3 tags.

So your next two files for this project should be named buddhistwritings_29_warren.mp3 and buddhistwritings_30_warren.mp3.

Here's my first one, it's my first attempt at a long piece, so comments most welcome!

I'm still confused about File Name and ID3 tags - after i've saved the file, and want to add tags via 'Get Info' in iTunes, i don't have a separate choice for 'Title' of file, but only 'Name', 'Album', 'Artist'.

So for example, if i entered '28 - The Story of Visakha' here under 'Name' in the Info tab, i would be changing the file name altogether.

Am i doing the right thing? What should i do for the next 2 recordings?

I had to resave the file name, and ended up loading it twice, sorry if that clogs things up!

It all depends on what program you are using for recording. If you are using Audacity use File=>Open Metadata Editor (at least in 1.3.3 and later), and that will give you a dialog box where you can enter the ID3 info. If you are given a choice of ID tag types (ID3v1 or ID3v2) be sure to select v2. Fill in the title field with the section title, remembering the section number, a space, a dash, another space, and then the title of the chapter. Sometimes the Title column in the Window will have everything laid out just right, and you can copy and paste it in. The Album tag is the name of the book, and the artist is the author. examples of all three should be listed in the first post of very project you work on, and those are the nly tags you need to worry about. Track number and genre will get filled in automatically at validation time by the MC.

iTunes can also add the ID3 tags for mp3s. Import the file into iTunes, single click on it, do a "Get Info" for the file, and click on the tabs at the top until you see the tag fields. Agan, only artist, album and title need to be filled in.

There should be a link in the first post linking into the wiki regarding ID3 tags. If it's not there, you can go to the "Guides for Listeners & Volunteers" at the top of any forum page, and it should be listed on the main wiki page somewhere.

That's where i'm confused - when i at the 'Info' tab of Get Info, the fields to be filled in are: Name, Artist, Album Artist, Album, Grouping, Composer, Comments, Genre.

There's no 'title'. And if i enter details intended for the 'title' field under 'Name', then it changes the name of the file altogether.

I've read the wiki link quite a few times, as well as instructions from http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/GarageBand which is the program i use to record before loading onto iTunes, but i just can't seem to enter the TITLE for ID3 tags without changing the FILE name, which is why i named the file incorrectly in the first place.

If anyone has suggestions, most welcome!

Rae, Apple uses a slightly different naming scheme than most other ID3 taggers, now that you've reminded me. Name=Section Title, Artist=Author, and Album=Name of book. Leave the others blank, and click OK. And there's a preferences setting you can uncheck for the renaming, let me go find it. Be right back.

EDIT: I'm using iTunes 8, and it's Edit=>Preferences, click on the Advanced tab, and UNcheck "Keep iTunes music folder organized". iTunes 7 has a siilar option, but I'm not sure exactly which tab it's on. It may be on one of the sub-tabs of the Advanced tab (probably the Importing sub-tab, if I remember correctly). Check around, it'll be named something very similar.

PaulW, thanks for your tip about my computer crash and recovery of audacity files. I tried it and it took a while. It was easier
to just re-record and yes, I faithfully saved every two minutes and
got it done a lot faster.

The file is now uploaded as buddhistwritings_06_warren.mps3 and is 38:40 mins long
