A classic of Victorian travel writing, Kinglake’s book describes his journey through the Ottoman empire to Cairo, and his residence there in time of plague. [Summary by hefyd]

   Target completion date of this project: December 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

   Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

Thanks for setting it all up Catharine [I couldn't get into the magic window though]. The title by the way is pronounced E-O-THEN, or A-O-THEN whichever you prefer [ie pronounce the first two letters as you would pronounce them as letters of the alphabet, and 'th' as in 'thick', not as in 'then', stress is on the first syllable;probably Kinglake would have said E-O-THEN.hefyd

Hi hefyd,
I would be interested in reading chapter 18, on Cairo and the plague - if that's OK with you. Some questions:
- what do you want us to do with the footnotes?
- chapter 18 is one of the longer ones, 8616 words (without the footnotes) - do you want me to split it up in two sections, or shall I just read it in one recording (as long as it stays within the 70 min) ?

Hi lezer -C18 is yours. We'll leave the notes out I think, though it's a shame since they're often of great interest. I think too that it will be fine to read the whole chapter through as it stands -it shouldn't be too long.hefyd
