COMPLETED: Open Library Vision

To complement the other works we've read for the Open Library, let's take tis' idea from another thread in the Discussion forum and make it real-- let's share the reading of Brewster Kahle's Open Library vision statement. (BK is the founder of the Internet Archive and Open Library projects.)

If we each read one short page (no need to read the librivox intro or chapter numbers) , I will edit them all together into one full-length piece and add the librivox intro and so on.

Everyone's welcome to join in. Having many voices will help highlight how many different organizations are working on the project. MSN has committted to scan in 150,000 book in 2006! Books can be printed via LuLu; Librivox is reading some of them, and so on.

oh kristen,

it may be better for archive to have each page as an indiv file, so that you can hear it as you read. as well as a complete fused file.

also, as we start to do all these Open Library books, we might want to find a way to have mp3s reading page by page, as these books are laid out in the archive.

Regarding the mp3s reading "page by page" for Open Libray books, I think it will be troublesome to generate and upload 100+ files per book. And that fine granularity could make the listening experience awfully choppy, as the MP3s are streamed and there's a bit of a delay (more or less depending on your bandwidth) as each file cues before playing.

Readers who are following along with the audio will realise when to click to turn the page in the browser, I imagine, and the delay for the page refresh will be shorter than for the streaming.

So even in this case of such a short book, I think a fused file will work better than one file per page. What does everyone else think?

I think one fused file for this one, and continuing to divide by chapter for longer works will be fine.

I'll do Vision of an Open Library (2 pages) and i'd be delighted to do anything else you care to assign.

Hmm, I'm not too impressed with the "Search" function... I typed in "books accessible to all" and it came up with "no matching results".

Since we are fusing together, and are doing one page a peice, I am assuming we leave off the "Header" and "chapter titles", and just record the raw audio. Kristen please validate.

I'm avoiding real work. And I'm avoiding my Thucydides and my Treasure Island chapter with all the dialogue. It's much easier to deliver on quick hits like this one!
