This is another book being done by the Internet Archive, if anyone is interested in doing a recording super quick (ie by tomorrow, oct 25) that would be cool. pls post to claim a chap, and just get busy on it don't worry about getting confirmation. otherwise we might as well do the whole thing, anyway...

here's the pdf:
Old Christmas, by Washington Irving

chapters for reading:
*DONE CHRISTMAS
*DONE THE STAGE COACH
*DONE CHRISTMAS EVE
*DONE CHRISTMAS DAY
*DONE THE CHRISTMAS DINNER

if we could get one or 2 chaps that would be cool. if not, no worries.

Hugh.

Yikes, we've got songs in this one.

How do you usually handle them? Normally when reading aloud to friends, if they are songs I know, I sing them. If I don't know the songs, sometimes I make up a tune as I go.

But these are ancient English Christmas ditties that might even have been invented by the author and I'm not reading to friends who will forgive my weird singing.

Best to read the lyrics as poetry? Or do you have another way?

mine's in Latin, for heaven's sake... and it's not "The Boar's Head Carol" :) I'm just going to read it as poetry. I think that's safer than improvising a tune, heheh.

Not my finest hour -- had practically to whisper so as not to wake partner or neighbours.

I just read mine out -- if it had been a christmas carol I knew and it wasn't the middle of the night, I might conceivably have sung it. But mine didn't even rhyme!

Ar we doing notes as a separate reading? Or should we include them at the end of our chapter? (I'd suggest doing them at the end, as they seem to describe Christmas customs in more detail--plus I didn't read the two for my chapter...)

Mine is done (without the notes) and online here:

There's a lot of noise outside today--new construction in the neighborhood and the trains seem to have turned up the volume.

Hey Alex... do you happen to have a "country seat" in Yorkshire, and if so can we all come spend Christmas with you?

I read mine from the gutenberg text, too. The notes are included. But don't worry, the first note is in the Christmas Eve chapter.

The archive.org PDF version is lovely, but bothersome to read from when recording. I find it cumbersome to page through the illustrations and the blank pages behind. But it is very cool to see the illustrations and the old typesetting.

Interesting how we all have slightly different takes on things. I said "Christmas Eve" and "End of Christmas Eve" since the chapters weren't numbered in the table of contents.

I suppose it doesn't really matter, especially in a rush like this one. We're definitely learning things are we go along with LibriVox!
