I tried some amplification and noise reduction. Please let me know if it sounds too artificial. If so, I can re-record it at a higher volume.

Maria, it does sound artificial, and there are additional sounds that are actually added to tracks when some noise cleaning programs are used. That said, it isn't horrible, and I wouldn't like you to have to redo the whole hour, especially when it's so well read . . .

Do you have a copy of the original file, before amplification and noise cleaning were applied? One of our experts might be able to do the noise cleaning so the artifact sounds aren't audible. If you do, please send it, and we'll give it a try.

And yes, next time (and I hope you will read some more!) having the volume higher on the first pass is usually better. If you still have questions, we can give you some more tips.

Hi Michael, welcome to LibriVox. Section 46 has been assigned to you. Unless you have previous recording experience, you might like to submit a 3 or 4 minute sample of the beginning of your section to make sure the technical issues are all ironed out.

Just post it to this thread, and I'll have a listen. When you reply, please tell me the name you wish to use for catalog credit and your URL, if any.

Where is Mr. Peggotty from? Dickens wrote the dialog with an accent, so I'm assuming Peggotty is not English. Wikipedia says they're from Yarmouth, but I'm not sure which Yarmouth.

Any hints on how Mr. Peggotty is supposed to sound? Thanks for the help

I don't know if Yarmouth is real, but I'm quite sure that in this story it is an English coastal town and that Peggotty is English with a different accent than that of, say an educated Londoner.

Dickens wrote his dialog with many different English accents, depending on what part of England the characters are from. The same way that an American author might write the dialog differently for a southerner or a New Yorker, for example. I don't "do" accents, but I find that if I read Dickens' dialogs just the way he wrote them, it conveys a pretty good idea of what he's after. He was very good at writing things the way they should be pronounced.

I believe it is much too low. And there are mouse clicks and chair creaks… Please see whether there is something that can be done. But if not, I will be more than happy to do it again. Really. It was my first attempt and I am sure there are many passages I can try and do better.

DebraLynn's advice is excellent: The simplest way is not to worry to much about it - Dickens' phonetic spelling is excellent.

I've often wondered which Yarmouth. We need some help here from an East Anglian, but as a Dickens fan from the US, I don't think it's the one on the Isle of Wight. I think it's the one on the East Anglian (east) cost, roughly between London and Norfolk, because they drive there in Barkis' cart without having to take a ferry.

As to accent, all I can suggest is listening to some of the chapters already done with Mr. Pegotty in them. Or, if you want more detail, post in "Help and advice" and one of out British volunteers will help you.
