The Irish Land Question, by Henry George (1839 - 1897)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-irish-land-question-by-henry-george/
What I want to impress upon those who may read this paper is this: The Irish land question is not a mere local question; it is a universal question. It involves the great problem of the distribution of wealth, which is everywhere forcing itself upon attention. It can not be settled by measures which in their nature can have but a local application. It can only be settled by measures which in their nature will apply everywhere as readily as in Ireland. (Summary by Henry George)
Source text (please read only from this text!): https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Irish_Land_Question.html?id=PmYuAAAAMAAJ

Target completion date: 2021-11-05

Prooflistening level: Special - Standard PL, plus checking for word changes or omissions that change the meaning of the text.
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This is set up. As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here: Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest.

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

---

Word Perfect PL might be a bit difficult to find a proof-listener. Also, some discrepancies aren't really that important (missing a "the" or something doesn't change the meaning of the text). Perhaps you might want to change it to Special and specify that you want the listener to note word changes or omissions that change the meaning of the text?

Hello, SeanDalton,

I've read up to page fifteen from the text and can say the book certainly appeals to me.

What kind of DPLing do you have in mind?

Best,

Hello, Dulcamara,

Thank you for your interest in the text! I was initially thinking word-perfect PL, but per TriciaG's suggestion, it'd be sufficient to note word changes or omissions that change the meaning of the text.

That's standard proof-listening, then, right? I'm available as DPL if that's fine by you. This book really interests me! :D

(Anyway, I habitually follow the text while listening, just in case.)

Well, standard doesn't require reading along with the text, so it's more a special PL. 8-)

I've put you in as DPL, and moving this to Going Solo...

Thanks for DPLing!

I'll aim to finish reading the text this week in-between midterms and start recording promptly after.

Chapter 2 (10:39):
https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/irishlandquestion_02_george_128kb.mp3

Are the mouth noises in the reading distracting? I'm trying to remedy them either in recording or editing, but I can't tell whether I hear them so prominently because I'm focusing on them or because they're distracting.

No distracting noises at all. It sounds perfectly fine to me! :D

I just have a minor observation on Chapter 2: ~0:55 I seem to hear "from" instead of "of", which would alter the meaning.

"We hear a great deal of this emigration, from the millions of sons and daughters..."

The text goes "...of the millions of sons and daughters..."

What a powerful, sobering chapter!

Chapter 3 (15:03): https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/irishlandquestion_03_george_128kb.mp3

Sorry for the delay. I recorded this nearly a month ago, but there was an error I needed to rerecord, and in the meantime I got in my head about reading speed. If you have constructive criticism regarding wpm or in general, I'd be happy to incorporate it.
