The Rescue, by Joseph Conrad (1857 - 1924)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-rescue-by-joseph-conrad/
"The Rescue" is the third of Conrad's novels to feature Captain Tom Lingard, an independent buccaneer operating in the Malayan archipelago. Tom Lingard was probably based on the real-life William Lingard, a runaway from an English landed family who owned several ships and traded extensively (and perhaps illegally) around the Macassar Strait in the mid-nineteenth century. In this prequel to both "An Outcast of the Islands" and "Almayer's Folly", Tom Lingard, after several years of expensive preparation, is right on the verge of pulling off a noble plan to restore a tribal prince and princess to their rightful realm with the help of native allies through a show of force when he learns that a wealthy and arrogant Englishman has accidentally run his pleasure yacht aground right in the middle of his own proposed field of operations. The yacht owner refuses Lingard's pleas to leave his yacht for a few days to allow Lingard to carry out his plans, and matters soon get even stickier when a group of Lingard's notional 'allies' on shore capture the yacht's owner just as Lingard and the yacht owner's wife find they are falling in love. IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thanks Dave. I'll get back to you much later in the reading once I have refreshed myself on what this novel is about (long time since I first read it) and can write a sensible summary.

Wonderful to embark on another novel by Joseph Conrad! I'll have to go on another long walk so that I can keep up with Peter :D

Thank you, Susanne.

I've just realised that I've ended up with a mismatch between section numbers as the MW lists these (starting with zero) and the numbers I've allocated to the filenames. This is not something you will need to worry about, but I had better sort it out quickly with our MC. Filenames and MW section numbers should probably be matched.

In the meantime, I have just uploaded what in the MW is listed as section 3, but which I have currently named https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/rescue_04_conrad_128kb.mp3 (41:27)

Hi Dave,
I've just realised that (presumably) because in the project template I said there was an introductory file, the first section number that appears in the MW is shown as "section 0", whereas I have, for now anyway, saved the associated audio file with a name that suggests it is section 1.

Would it be best if, at this point, I changed the filenames of my mp3 files so that the first contains "00", the next "01" and so on, and upload all the audio files I've so far recorded (only four in all) again using the new file names, and change their URL entries in the MW? I imagine this is going to be the least confusing approach in the long run.

I have read this novel in the past, but it's a long time ago, and in truth I don't remember much about it. I think it's reputation is more along the lines of a 'ripping yarn' or a 'boy's own adventure' than great literature, necessarily — though having said that, I don't think there are too many authors of boys' adventures who write such vivid and beautiful descriptive prose.

Dave, our MC, has renumbered the sections in the MW so that the first section is now shown as "1" instead of "0" as previously. I hope this won't cause you any inconvenience.

I have now uploaded:
Section 05: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/rescue_05_conrad_128kb.mp3 (22:07)
Section 06: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/rescue_06_conrad_128kb.mp3 (12:33)
